43 Semi-Truck Trailers Make Special Deliveries of Donated Computers at Schools Across Ontario28 February 2006
Computers for Schools Ontario (CFSO) is the recipient of 10,900 full computer systems, over 300 laptops, 5,000 additional monitors and 79 servers thanks to a combined donation from TD Waterhouse and TD Canada Trust. Communities across Ontario will be receiving much-needed IT equipment for their classrooms with computers being distributed to schools in Belleville, London, Mississauga, Ottawa, Scarborough, Sharbot Lake, St. Catharines and Sudbury. Computers for Schools Ontario (CFSO) is a not-for-profit organization that has donated over 250,000 computers since its inception and almost 40,000 in the last year. Computers for Schools was co-founded in 1993 by Industry Canada and the Telecom Pioneers. The organization refurbishes computers and related equipment donated by governments and businesses distributing technology across Canada to schools, libraries and not-for-profit learning organizations. "Many schools face restricted budgets and resources, which can create limited computer learning experiences for students. TD's donation of computers to schools in need compliments our focus on promoting education while also helping the environment," says John Davies, Senior Vice President, Enterprise Technology Solutions, TD Bank Financial Group. The donated computers, mostly Pentium III with plenty of muscle left for school use, have begun arriving in schools. "The demand for computers by schools exceeds our current supply so this donation is very meaningful and has a great impact on learners," says Carla Stachowski, CFSO's Executive Director. "All students benefit from having renewable access to our most valuable learning and communication tool - computer technology." IBM and MicroAge have generously donated their time to prepare the computers for redistribution. This includes checking the computers for full functionality and reformatting the hard drives to ensure security standards are enforced.
