AMD Extends Technology Sponsorship With Lance Armstrong

13 January 2005

AMD (NYSE:AMD) today announced an extended technology sponsorship agreement with Lance Armstrong and the newly unveiled Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team. AMD technology solutions play a critical role in the team's success, allowing riders and coaches to collect, analyze and interpret training data, and enabling team partners to design and develop state-of-the-art equipment.

In 2005, AMD plans to equip members of the team with mobile computer systems based on the new AMD Turion(TM) 64 mobile technology processors once they are available. Armstrong unveiled the new AMD Turion brand, designed to bring AMD64 performance to a new level of mobility, at the International CES 2005 show in Las Vegas last week.

"The sport of cycling is extremely competitive, and we look at everything from our training to the design of our equipment in order to maximize our performance," said Lance Armstrong. "We count on AMD as our technology sponsor to help make us lighter, faster and more efficient so we can win races."

AMD technology will also continue to play a key role with the team's "F-1" group of sponsors, the team's name for a collaboration of experts that have come together to redesign their equipment, clothing and components. In 2004 Lance, with the help of his teammates, won a record-breaking sixth Tour de France victory. The entire team rode the Madone series of Trek bicycles designed on computer systems powered by AMD processors. Later this month, AMD technology will enable the "F-1" sponsors to make further improvements when five Discovery Channel cyclists participate in wind-tunnel testing to measure the effects of body and equipment position relative to air resistance in order to perfect the time trial positions that will be used throughout the season.

"We put together the 'F-1' team of sponsors because we believe there is a holistic connection between a cyclist and his equipment and that computer and communications technologies as well as ideas from beyond our sport will allow us to maximize the abilities of our riders and coaches," said Bart Knaggs, president, Discovery Channel Pro Cycling team. "Our team's obsessive focus on refining cycling technology has given us a clear advantage over other teams, and we're excited to have AMD and all of our 'F-1' sponsors on board collaborating with us for another three years."

"AMD, Lance Armstrong, and the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team all share the strength, determination and passion to win in the most competitive environments in the world," said Henri Richard, executive vice president of worldwide sales and marketing, AMD. "2004 was an incredible first year with the team for AMD, and we look forward to working closely with Lance and the Discovery Channel Team to develop the technology solutions that can make 2005 another record-breaking season."

The Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team, formerly known as the USPS Pro Cycling Team, includes 28 cyclists from 15 countries and is led by Lance Armstrong, the first rider in history to win the prestigious Tour de France six times. The new sponsorship agreement establishes AMD as the team's second-largest sponsor behind new title sponsor Discovery Communications.
