Analysys International Says China's IC Market Keeps Growing and Domestic Manufacturers Need to Speed Up7 February 2006
Analysys International, a leading Internet-based business information service provider, recently produced a report entitled China IC Market Annual Report 2005-2006, which said that China's IC market size rapidly grew to RMB 368.28 billion in 2005, and Chinese IC manufacturers need to speed up. According to the report, China's IC market maintained steady growth in Q2 and Q3 and by the end of Q4, the total market size reached RMB 368.28 billion. The industrial market accounted for 21% of the total IC market. Overseas manufacturers provided about 80% of China's IC products. China is in a weak position in the global IC industry, far behind the U.S. and Europe. http://english.analysys.com.cn/3class/detail.php?advertisement=002&id=155&name =report&FocusAreaTitleGB=&daohang=Report&title= Analysys International says Chinese IC design firms only provide low-end MCU and smart card chip products while overseas firms dominate high-end products in the IC industry. For example, China's Vimicro occupied 60% of the global multimedia chip market, Intel and AMD dominates the general CPU market, Qualcomm occupies 2.5G CDMA and 3G handset chipset market, and Samsung occupies the largest share of the memory chipset market. China's IC industry needs technology innovation and more qualified personnel. Zhao Yazhou, an analyst from Analysys International, says, ''The total sales of China's IC design sector accounted for only 3% of the global market, China's IC patents accounted for less than 4% of the global total. Semiconductor materials and equipment are still the bottleneck of the development of China's IC manufacturing industry. Over 95% of equipment and 8-inch plus silicon wafers are imported. Advanced packaging technology and materials are still the barrier of the IC packaging industry. Chinese firms have almost no capability to produce BGA and CSP packaging boards, and there has been no progress in MCP and SIP, either.'' Although there are many deficiencies in the development of China's IC industry, the development trend is only satisfactory. Analysys International says China's IC industry structure is continuously optimizing, the proportion of packaging industry has declined to below 50%, and the IC design sector is developing rapidly with market share increasing. In 2006, with the initiation of China's 3G and digital family markets, downstream products will inevitably drive the development of the upstream chipset market. This subject is further discussed in Analysys International's research reports China IC Market Annual Report 2005-2006. For more information, please check the website: http://english.analysys.com.cn.
