BEA WebLogic Server(R) 9.0 Continues to Set Performance Records10 November 2005
BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), a world leader in enterprise infrastructure software, today announced SPECjAppServer2004 benchmark results on BEA WebLogic Server(R) 9.0 reaffirming its industry leadership position in providing the best hardware utilization in the industry. The benchmark results, each setting a new performance record, prove that WLS requires fewer CPUs per JOPS (jAppServer Operations Per Second) than any other application server. For WLS customers this means an increase in performance while simultaneously reducing total cost of ownership (TCO). "BEA proves once again that WebLogic Server delivers the fastest and most efficient J2EE platform technology on the planet," said Ed Whelan, director, engineering, BEA Systems. "WebLogic Server has not only demonstrated its mettle on the HP(R)/Intel(R) platform, but has now done so on multiple platforms. This capability gives our customers the flexibility to rapidly build, manage and scale their applications." BEA WebLogic Server 9.0 is the industry's first hot-swappable application server allowing for zero downtime upgrades. For architects and developers building next-generation Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs), WebLogic Server with its advanced Web Services stack is the application infrastructure software of choice to build services and enterprise Java applications. WLS allows for blended development and deployment, supporting multiple programming models and open source frameworks like Spring and Apache Beehive. The WLS administrative console lets administrators inspect, configure and manage blended deployments including Spring beans and Apache Tomcat. BEA's SPECjAppServer2004 results beat every other vendors' top results by a significant margin, particularly in the area of total CPUs per 1,000 JOPS. IBM WebSphere 6.0's top result, 1343.47 SPECjAppServer2004 JOPS@Standard required 20 Intel Xeon CPUs, for a total of 14.89 CPUs per 1,000 JOPS. That translates to nearly double the number of CPUs than WebLogic Server 9.0 when it achieved its result of 1,374.11 SPECjAppServer2004 JOPS@Standard. Sun's Java Application Server 8.1's best result, 1,201.44 SPECjAppServer2004 JOPS@Standard, was produced using 26 AMD Opteron CPUs and required 21.64 CPUs per 1,000 JOPS. That translates to nearly double the number of CPUs required by WebLogic Server 9.0 to achieve a significantly higher result of 1,781.47 SPECjAppServer2004 JOPS@Standard. Oracle and JBoss have yet to submit SPECjAppServer2004 benchmark results. SPECjAppServer2004 is an industry-standard benchmark independently designed and validated by SPEC, a non-profit organization that establishes, maintains and endorses standardized benchmarks. SPECjAppServer2004 is specifically designed to measure the scalability and performance of Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) technology-based application servers, such as WebLogic 9.0. About SPEC SPEC is a non-profit organization that establishes, maintains and endorses standardized benchmarks to measure the performance of the newest generation of high-performance computers. Its membership comprises leading computer hardware and software vendors, universities, and research organizations worldwide. Steve Realmuto, a senior software engineer for BEA is on the Board of Directors. For complete details on benchmark results and the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation, please see http://www.spec.org/ . About SPECjAppServer2004 Created by SPEC, the SPECjAppServer2004 benchmark was developed to measure the performance of Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) application servers. New elements in the benchmark include a modified workload and features that stress more of the capabilities of J2EE 1.3 or later application servers. The benchmark tests performance for a representative J2EE application and each of the components that make up the application environment, including hardware, application server software, JVM software, database software, JDBC drivers and the system network. It was developed by SPEC's Java subcommittee, which includes BEA, Borland, Darmstadt University of Technology, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Oracle, Pramati, Sun Microsystems and Sybase.
