Boston-Power Unveils World's First Battery Designed to Last Lifespan of Notebook Computers at DEMO 07

10 February 2007

DEMO 07 -- Boston-Power, Inc.(TM), an early-stage provider of portable power solutions, today announced its Sonata product line, a next-generation, lithium-ion battery for notebook computers.

Boston-Power is working closely with HP in the testing and validation process of this new technology. Boston-Power Founder and CEO Dr. Christina Lampe-Onnerud will be joined on-stage by HP Distinguished Technologist Dr. John Wozniak for the first public unveiling of Sonata this Thursday at DEMO 07, a premier launch venue for new technologies, products and companies underway this week in Palm Desert, Calif.

In related news, Boston-Power also announced today $15.6 million in Series B financing. (See press release: "Boston-Power Fuels Expansion with $15.6 Million in Series B Financing.")

"I've worked closely with the top players in the portable power market for 15 years and see a compelling opportunity to introduce a new approach to solving the problems facing battery pack manufacturers and their OEMs," said Lampe-Onnerud. "Boston-Power has assembled some of the top R&D, manufacturing and business development executives in our field and is committed to a whole- system, application-specific design approach."

"Our first product line, Sonata, demonstrates that this yields a better performing, cost-effective battery with best-in-class safety assurances," Lampe-Onnerud continued. "We look forward to overcoming the notebook computer battery challenge first, and over time applying our solutions to other mobile devices."

"As the world's number one supplier of notebook computers, HP is deeply committed to capitalizing on innovations in portable power," said Wozniak. "We believe that lithium-ion is the best solution to power notebook computers for the foreseeable future. HP welcomes opportunities to incorporate advancements in this area into our products to the benefit of our customers."

Boston-Power's Sonata product line is a drop-in technology that can be used in existing notebook computers. Significantly, it requires no design changes on the part of the notebook computer OEM. Sonata features enhancements in both performance and safety; its proprietary safety features include slower chemical kinetics, novel current interrupt devices, new thermal fuses, unique pressure relief vents and safer pack configuration. The first notebook computers to use Sonata batteries are expected to ship this summer.

Sonata provides on-the-go notebook computer users with the industry's fastest recharge time -- recharging to 80 percent capacity in just 30 minutes. This represents approximately half the time required by other batteries.

Additionally, Sonata is the only battery designed to match the lifespan of a notebook computer. To date, most users find that they need to buy at least three batteries in the first three years of use of a new notebook computer. Sonata is designed so these users should only need one battery during this same timeframe.

"DEMO has always highlighted important innovation that takes mobile computing to the next level," said DEMO Executive Producer Chris Shipley. "Boston-Power is clearly at the forefront of delivering extraordinary mobility to notebook users. Its battery technology solves critical issues that have plagued laptop users, while delivering greater flexibility and benefits. Boston-Power is a company to watch; it promises to power a wide range of mobile devices we use today ... and many we'll use in the future."
