Broadcom Ships 100 Millionth 54g(R) Wi-Fi(R) Chipset28 June 2006
Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that it has shipped its 100 millionth 54g(R) chipset -- making 54g the industry's best-selling Wi-Fi(R) solution ever. This milestone not only demonstrates the continued demand for Broadcom's maximum performance 802.11g solutions, but also highlights the company's ongoing leadership across multiple segments of the Wi-Fi market. As the industry transitions to next generation Wi-Fi technologies, the substantial installed base of proven 54g products positions Broadcom to continue its leadership. (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20060609/BROADCOMLOGO ) "802.11g is currently the most prevalent Wi-Fi technology because it offers the best price/performance ratio for consumers," said Michael Hurlston, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Wireless LAN Business Unit. "Since delivering the industry's first 802.11g solutions, Broadcom has maintained leadership by partnering with the top vendors in a variety of segments. We will continue to serve both the established and emerging segments of the Wi-Fi market by delivering solutions that offer the features and performance that customers demand." In the first quarter of 2006, Broadcom was the leading Wi-Fi chipset supplier(1). To date, Broadcom's strength has been driven by the extensive adoption of 54g solutions in the leading brands of wireless PCs and retail networking gear. Broadcom(R) 54g chipsets and software are currently featured in a majority of 802.11g routers sold through U.S. retail outlets(2), from manufacturers such as Belkin, Buffalo, Linksys, NETGEAR and USRobotics. Several of these partners have extended their relationships with Broadcom by introducing new products based on the company's draft-802.11n Intensi-fi(TM) solutions. 54g Rides Wave of Notebook Growth Broadcom 54g solutions are also featured in eight of the top ten brands of notebook PCs(3). As more consumers and businesses demand ubiquitous access to information, Wi-Fi connectivity has become a must-have feature, and is projected to achieve a 95 percent attach rate in notebook computers this year(4). 54g technology enables PC manufacturers to deliver systems that meet this growing demand for reliable, high-performance and secure wireless connectivity. Broadcom has also partnered with major PC processor vendors to enhance the wireless experience on the latest notebook platforms. "Strong collaboration between AMD and Broadcom helps ensure that notebook PCs with 54g wireless technology and powered by AMD Turion(TM) 64 mobile technology provide outstanding performance and an exceptional mobile experience," said Chris Cloran, vice president, AMD Mobile Division. "Broadcom delivers industry-leading technology and a wide breadth of connectivity solutions, which helps AMD's OEM customers provide more innovative and feature-rich notebooks." Extending Leadership with Embedded Wi-Fi Solutions Broadcom is extending its Wi-Fi leadership as manufacturers embed wireless connectivity into a wide array of devices. As the leading provider of both ADSL and Wi-Fi chipsets, Broadcom is uniquely positioned to capitalize on one of the fastest growing opportunities -- the integration of Wi-Fi technology into broadband gateways. Nearly one-third of all DSL gateways now include Wi-Fi technology, eliminating the need for consumers to buy separate modem and router products. In 2006, the number of wireless DSL gateways is expected to grow more than 60 percent(5), demonstrating continued demand for integrated ADSL+Wi-Fi solutions. Broadcom is also working with the leading consumer electronics manufacturers to add 54g connectivity to a variety of computer peripherals, entertainment devices and information appliances. These products include: gaming systems, such as the new Nintendo Wii(TM) game console; printers from HP and Brother; Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phones; digital cameras, and digital video recorders (DVR), among others. "Broadcom is a top supplier of 802.11g chipsets for networking equipment and is increasingly focused on embedded Wi-Fi into consumer electronics and other products," said Philip Solis, Senior Analyst at ABI Research. "We expect the embedded Wi-Fi market to increase ten-fold over the next five years, providing plenty of opportunities for chipset suppliers to maintain or expand their wireless market share." Broadcom 54g chipsets have become the most popular Wi-Fi solutions because they provide the performance, reliability, ease-of-use and security that manufacturers and end users demand. Millions of Wi-Fi routers and client devices now offer innovative Broadcom features, including: * SecureEasySetup(TM) technology -- allows users to configure their Wi-Fi networks and activate WPA(TM) security with the push of a button; * BroadRange(TM) technology -- extends the range of devices based on 54g by up to 50 percent, * 125 High Speed Mode(TM) -- the industry's most popular performance enhancement, delivering up to 40 percent greater throughput than typical 802.11g or 802.11a/g systems. Broadcom's Wireless LAN Product Family Broadcom's high performance AirForce(TM) wireless LAN product line includes 54g (the world's most popular Wi-Fi technology), and Intensi-fi(TM) (the industry's first IEEE 802.11n draft compliant chipsets). In addition to transceiver solutions that provide single- and dual-band wireless connectivity, Broadcom integrates wireless network processors, communications technologies and its OneDriver(TM) software solutions into reference designs that speed customer time to market. The industry's leading manufacturers are developing computers, routers, peripherals, phones, broadband modems and a variety of consumer electronics devices connected by Broadcom technologies.
