Burnbrae Farms partners with CNIB to highlight link between nutrition and eye health17 May 2006
Burnbrae Farms, Canada's leading egg producer, has partnered with CNIB, Canada's primary provider of vision loss support programs and services, to educate Canadian consumers and health professionals about the role nutrition plays in preventing age related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of vision loss among older Canadians. "The facts are clear - AMD is on the rise and we are facing an aging population," says Jim Sanders, President and CEO, CNIB. "We need to reach out to consumers and health professionals to ensure that they are fully aware of the important role a healthy diet plays in the prevention of eye disease. This partnership will make it possible for us to reach out to millions of consumers and thousands of health professionals in 2006." The partnership will include tips and consumer health information displayed in packages of Burnbrae Farms' new Naturegg(TM) Omega Pro(TM) eggs, as well as educational literature providing the latest research on the eye health benefits related to lutein, an anti-oxidant that has shown early promise in the fight against AMD. "It is common sense that there is a direct link between good nutrition and good health, which includes taking care of your eyes," says Margaret Hudson, co-owner of Burnbrae Farms. "DHA omega-3 fatty acids are now widely recognized as important in early human development, including vision. It is also exciting to see indications that lutein may well be important in the prevention of eye diseases such as AMD." AMD, which affects as many as two million Canadians, is a progressive condition that attacks the macula, a small area on the retina responsible for central vision. Even though there is no cure for AMD once it strikes, research shows there are many risk factors that can be avoided, as well as measures to slow down the disease. Burnbrae Farms recently launched Naturegg(TM) Omega Pro(TM), which contain increased levels of DHA omega-3 polyunsaturates and higher levels of lutein, an anti-oxidant that research suggests may protect against AMD. The first initiatives under the partnership will begin unfolding early summer with an information brochure distributed to dieticians and other health professionals. Consumer tips and health information will begin appearing on packages of Naturegg(TM) Omega Pro(TM) eggs in October.
