Buying Tips: How to Choose a Portable Speaker

Portable Speaker

For most of us and TL Dev Tech, parties would be incomplete without music. Generations ago, people would haul up large speakers just to get the groove started. However, unlike before, there are wireless speakers which are light and handy nowadays. You can literally bring them anywhere.

The most common types of wireless speakers on the market are Bluetooth and Wi-Fi speakers. Wi-Fi speakers use internet connection to function and provide better sound quality than Bluetooth speakers. Conversely, it has several disadvantages such as a complicated setup, connectivity issues due to an unreliable internet connection, and plugin connection. All these make Bluetooth speaker better since it is more convenient and has a simple configuration.

That said, if you want to choose a portable speaker, here are some tips you want to consider:

Go for a Compact and Lightweight Option

Convenience is the main element in choosing your portable speaker. It should be handy, light, and durable. Playbacks should last at least 10 hours. Furthermore, opt for portable speakers that are housed in an aluminum casing since they are more resilient than plastic ones.

Make Sure It Has Superb Sound Quality

When going for a speaker with superb sound quality, it helps to remember these factors:

  • Output power or the volume range which is around 15 to 20 watts. These values can produce 80 decibels which are appropriate for outdoor usage. Volume should be maximized by 80% only because it can cause distortion if the value goes beyond that.
  • Frequency range which refers to the sound perceptibility by the human ear. Your chosen speaker should be capable of emitting 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.
  • Sound system or the channels through where the sound is emitted should consist of two full-range speakers (2.0) or a plus one-sub (2.1) which has a higher quality.
  • Impedance – the lower it is, the better the sound quality.

Check Its Connectivity

The latest near-field communication (NFC) technology makes pairing devices easier. Just bring the devices close to each other for two seconds and you instantly have your connection.

However, older drive units would entail the use of a 3mm audio jack to be able to connect to the speaker. For some Bluetooth models, a mobile application is readily available to connect the device to several speakers so as to achieve a surround-sound effect. However, this feature is more common in Wi-Fi home speakers.

Make Sure the Controls Are Simple to Use

Your chosen speaker should be user-friendly and have minimal and basic controls such as the power button, play/pause button, volume control, hands-free phone calls answer button, and a built-in microphone so that you can speak to it.

Consider the Price Tag

Portable speakers need not be expensive. Simply put, it should be of the best quality but at an affordable price. Try to do some research by going over product reviews and find the one that suits your needs so that you won’t splurge on expensive, damage-prone Bluetooth speakers.

With plenty of portable speakers on the market, choosing one can be quite overwhelming. However, as long as you follow the above tips, you should be able to come across one that can meet your audio needs.
