Bytemobile Launches New Optimization Solutions for High-Speed Wireless Data Networks

26 May 2006

Bytemobile, Inc., the global leader in optimized Internet protocol (IP) services for mobile data networks, today announced the general availability of Release 3.1 of its Optimization Services Node (OSN) Standard Edition and OSN Monaco(TM) Edition. Designed for deployment in 3G and 3.5G networks, the new optimization solutions effectively expand platform capacity for wireless data traffic to 10 times that of the previous release, OSN 3.0. Implementation on the Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Opteron(TM) dual-core 2.2-GHz processor results in a significant price/performance increase for mobile network operators.

OSN Standard for laptops and OSN Monaco for mobile handsets provide efficient, cost-effective scalability for wireless data networks of all sizes. This enables operators to drive subscriber growth and data traffic, while improving capacity, increasing operational efficiencies, and therefore enhancing their return on infrastructure investment.

"There is a common perception that today's high-speed wireless data networks obviate the need for optimization," said David Nowicki, vice president of Marketing and Product Management at Bytemobile. "However, in an increasingly competitive environment for network operators, optimization remains critical to the quality of the user experience for new and more sophisticated mobile broadband applications."

The high-speed wireless data networks that OSN Standard and OSN Monaco 3.1 are designed to support include UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System), HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access), and CDMA 2000-1x EV-DO (EVolution Data Only).

Nowicki added, "In our own customer base, OSN 3.0 has provided superior data acceleration on 3.5G networks, and this has fueled dramatic growth in data traffic. As a result, customers require significant increases in optimization capacity to keep pace with user demand for richer content and more robust services. We believe that OSN 3.1 -- with its 10-fold capacity improvement, corresponding price/performance advantage, and enhanced scalability -- will enable customers to maintain a high-quality subscriber experience, while increasing average revenue per user (ARPU) and profitably growing their subscriber base through the deployment of new applications."

In November 2005, Bytemobile reported acceleration of up to 2x for wireless data applications in an HSDPA network trial with a major infrastructure provider in Europe. In this trial, Bytemobile's client-server OSN 3.0 demonstrated an effective throughput increase from 700 kbps to 1,400 kbps for laptop web browsing.

The HSDPA specification calls for data rates of up to 14 Mbps; however, practical application performance in typical wide-area networks averages approximately 700 kbps or less. In a report published on November 7, 2005 (http://www.motorola.com/mediacenter/news/detail/0,,6084_6045_23,00.html), Motorola, Inc. cited latency as a major factor in the performance of HSDPA networks below both theoretical and practical levels, especially for Internet applications.

New Features and Functions

OSN Standard 3.1 supports header enrichment, which adds subscriber and network information, configured by the operator, to outgoing HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) traffic. This capability enables operators to deliver enhanced, personalized data services.

OSN Monaco 3.1 supports a full-featured, fully integrated WAP (wireless application protocol) 2 Gateway. The resulting consolidation of network elements enables operators to improve the user experience by accelerating data delivery without compromising WAP 2 functionality.

OSN Monaco 3.1 also features new capabilities for embedding optimization in mobile handset browsers. In January 2006, Bytemobile announced its first browser optimization partnership with Opera Software ASA. The two companies also announced the availability of a new Opera Mobile browser -- an HTML solution for full Internet access on handsets -- whose speed is accelerated by up to 3x on 3G networks powered by Bytemobile's OSN Monaco server.

Bytemobile's OSN is currently installed in the wireless networks of nearly 70 mobile operators worldwide, serving an aggregate of nearly one billion subscribers in 30 countries. In addition to accelerating network performance, OSN Standard and OSN Monaco expand effective platform capacity by reducing data volumes transferred per transaction. OSN Monaco is available in both server and client-server configurations for handset optimization.
