DigiTimes.com introduces world’s first AOpen Mini PC to readers

Reporting on the latest offerings from exhibitors at the just concluded international IT trade show Computex Taipei 2005 on DigiTimes.com [June 2, 2005], McManus described the AOpen Mini PC system – developed in cooperation with Intel – as matching the Apple Mac Mini in size, performance and price.

The AOpen Mini PC system measures 15cm by 15cm and just 5 cm high ( 5.9 x 5.9 x 1.96 inch ) as shown in the two photos of the Mini PC series along with a NT$500 Taiwan currency bill in the IT industry report of DigiTimes.com.

The new system is powered by the Intel Pentium M processor running at 1.3GHz or 1.6GHz with support of the mobile 915GM chipset which is embedded with a GMA 900 graphics processor.

Quoting company sources, McManus noted that the system will be the most competitive Pentium M desktop solution on the market. The sources added that the current challenge of hitting the US$499 target price is more of a software issue than a hardware issue.

The Mini PC will include a 2.5-inch hard drive and slide-in optical drive, which will vary among a combo drive, DVD-ROM and DVD burner, depending on the SKU. A wireless mini-PCI 802.11 a/b/g wireless communication module will also be included, as well as Bluetooth support on higher-end models. In addition, the system will have two USB ports and one IEEE 1394 port, though the sources stated that Intel and AOpen are still finalizing the specifications.

AOpen will target the digital home with the system, and has included DVI, S-Video, and YPbPr outputs for connecting to HDTVs, plasma displays, large screen displays, and high definition audio products, stated Tony Yang, marketing director of AOpen. The system is also designed for low-noise environments, and so has only two fans and is powered by an external 85-watt power supply.

Aside from marketing the system under its own brand, AOpen is also considering OEM opportunities, according to the widely read report which has helped to attract keen worldwide interest in the new product and fan an ongoing heated debate between PC lovers and Mac fans on the international market.
