Egenera Introduces Processing Blades Based on Dual-Core AMD64 Technology

22 April 2005

Egenera Inc., a global leader in utility computing, has announced availability within 30 days of both four-processor, eight-core and two-processor, four-core Egenera(R) Processing Blade(TM) configurations based on dual-core AMD64 technology. The new blades incorporate Dual-Core AMD Opteron(TM) processors, launched by AMD today.

-- Four-processor, eight-core Egenera Processing Blade: Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor Model 875, 1 MB L2 cache per core, 32 GB registered ECC DDR Chipkill(TM) memory, 1 GHz HyperTransport(TM) technology

-- Two-processor, four-core Egenera Processing Blade: Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor Model 275, 1 MB L2 cache per core, 8 GB registered ECC DDR Chipkill memory, 1 GHz HyperTransport technology

Egenera is introducing Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor-based Processing Blades in response to demand from its world-class customers. Today's announcement is yet another step in the Company's commitment to offer customers a uniquely flexible computing environment, which includes both 32- and 64-bit x86 processor architectures, multiple Linux(R) distributions, Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Server 2003, and with Solaris(TM) scheduled for the second half of 2005.

"Egenera continues to be a performance leader in the blade server market," said Susan Davis, vice president of marketing and product management, Egenera. "Coupled with the BladeFrame's redundancy and high availability versus other blade servers, our high-performance Processing Blades enable customers to run mission-critical applications on our systems. AMD's dual-core technology extends use of the BladeFrame to applications previously reserved for high-end RISC/UNIX systems."

"We applaud Egenera's decision earlier in the year to join the ranks of industry-leading companies offering AMD Opteron processor-based solutions, so that their customers can realize the benefits of dual-core AMD64 technology," said Ben Williams, vice president, Commercial and Server/Workstation Business, AMD. "Egenera is bringing these newest blades to market rapidly and offers a flexible computing system for their customers who require high computational performance."

"IDC believes that dual-core processing could accelerate workload shifts from mid- and high-end systems to entry- or volume-server-based platforms," said Vernon Turner, group vice president and general manager of Enterprise Computing, IDC.

Within the Egenera BladeFrame system, Processing Blade modules provide the capacity to run applications. These stateless resources enable automated allocation, repurposing and failover since any can assume the identity of any other. Eighty percent of the I/O devices on a legacy server have been transformed into software. Moreover, a single BladeFrame system can simultaneously run Processing Blades with various processor architectures and operating systems, enabling customers to automatically align computing resources to application requirements and scale performance dynamically.
