MEDIA RELEASE

24 April 2006

Freedom from thedesk -- Victoria goes wireless

Students studying atVictoria University can break free from their desks thanksto the University s new WirelessVic network.

Announcedtoday, the completion of the WirelessVic network on theKelburn, Karori, Pipitea and Te Aro campuses means studentsand staff with suitable laptops that have an appropriatewireless card will no longer have to plug them into the wallto connect to the Internet.

Throughout all four campusesin Wellington, 189 "hot spots" have been marked withstickers identifying them as wireless areas.

ProVice-Chancellor (Information Technology), Professor WarwickClegg, says the implementation of WirelessVic is part of theUniversity s IT strategy.

"The new network means staff andstudents will no longer have to be tied to a desk to beconnected to the University s computer systems while oncampus. They ll be able to access files, the internet andemail from many popular locations and collaborate over acoffee at one of our cafes or catch up on the news before alecture.

"We aim to achieve distinction as New Zealand shighest quality teaching, research and learning universityand if we re going to achieve that we have to invest in thesupporting infrastructure. In addition to the wirelessnetwork, we ve recently completed a $1.7 million upgrade ofour server room and we re investing heavily in new resourcesfor the library."

Alan Dempster, Director of InformationTechnology Services, says for a laptop to connect to thenetwork, the device will have to meet minimum technicalrequirements.

"Because not all laptops will be suitable toconnect to the network, our Information Technology Serviceshas set up a website to explain how to connect, the minimumtechnical requirements and where the hot spots arelocated."

Victoria University has been developing itswireless capability since an experimental wireless networkprovided by Interface, the student computer science club, was set up in June2003.
