Fujitsu Introduces High-Performance 32-bit Microcontroller with CAN, LIN Support12 September 2005
Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) today introduced new high-performance microcontrollers for automotive applications. The new Fujitsu MB91270 MCUs integrate a 32-bit CPU core with an innovative multi-level communications interface that supports an industry-leading 11 channels.
The MB91270 series supports the Controller Area Network (CAN), a maximum of seven channels of Local Interconnect Network (LIN), which can be configured as SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) or UART, and three channels of I2C (Inter IC Bus). With support for 11 serial communication channels, the new MCUs are designed to deliver maximum processing power to the control units that supervise vehicle airbag sensors, anti-lock braking systems, vehicle air conditioners, and other safety and comfort systems. Each MCU also incorporates a 24-channel AD converter for analog signal input from sensors, and deliver the speed and overall performance required to manage 11 channels of serial communications.
The MB91270 series is based on the Fujitsu FR60lite 32-bit CPU core, which features internal clock speeds reaching up to 32 MHz. The series can handle diverse data sources and perform complex calculations quickly, enabling automotive engineers to design control units that are able to maximize safety and comfort for drivers and passengers.
"Automotive onboard networks that control very advanced subsystems are capable of analyzing and controlling a vehicle's behavior," said Akio Nezu, senior marketing manager for Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. "This new series positions Fujitsu to deliver the performance and expandability required for the new, advanced in-vehicle systems that must acquire information from multiple sources rapidly and efficiently."
Fujitsu has been delivering microcontrollers for onboard networks since 1998 and has the industry's leading market share in 16-bit CAN microcontrollers. By delivering high- performance, leading-edge 32-bit microcontrollers that support the CAN interface, Fujitsu is bringing the optimal performance capabilities to vehicle ECUs, enabling improvements in vehicle safety features and passenger comfort systems.
Pricing and Availability The MB91270 series includes the MB91F272, which has both a main and a sub clock, and the MB92F1272S, which includes only a main clock. The devices, packaged in 100-pin, low-profile QFPs, are available now in sample quantities for under $8.85 each.
Each is designed for high compatibility with the Fujitsu MB90340A series of 16-bit microcontrollers, allowing engineers to use the same basic circuit board design when developing new control units that requires higher CPU performance.
The various interfaces supported by the series are listed below: Interface Channels Advantage CAN - for engine, body control 1 32 message buffers LIN-compliant UART- for vehicle accessories 7 Permits SPI communications I2C 3 Supports standard and fast modes
