«Most of us were throwing away the computer bags we received from our parents and just using our backpacks because they were at least a little more fashionable,» said Ostrowski, a business major who did her research the old-fashioned way. She simply asked the customer—scores of female college students—what they wanted in a laptop bag.
«Top on everyone's list was fun fabrics and colors,» she said. «They want their bags to be a fashion accessory, but they also were very specific about the bag's functionality.»
They wanted something big enough for their 15-inch laptops and their books. They wanted it to have a padded, waterproof computer compartment, something most of their backpacks lacked. And, they wanted separate, easily accessible pockets for the things they don't leave home without—their cell phone, iPod and water bottle.
Travis Manasco, a sophomore at UNC-Wilmington, helped Rachel with the interviews. His mom, physician and former pharmaceutical executive Penelope Manasco, is the founder of Penelope.
Penelope Manasco, who has logged more than 2 million miles in airline travel, started her laptop bag company 18 months ago out of frustration over not being able to find a bag that was stylish and comfortable enough for her needs. Her response was to create the Avion Bag, a fashionable laptop bag/briefcase that converts from a shoulder bag to a backpack in seconds.
Manasco listened to Rachel's findings and quickly launched a design for the Go Girl Laptop Messenger Bag, which includes all the convenience and fashion features Rachel and her friends wanted.
