Haier Corporation and Metalink Unveil Their Cooperation to Deploy Innovative Consumer Electronics Products Based on Metalink's WLANPlus Technology14 March 2006
Haier Corporation, the leading Chinese manufacturer of household electrical appliances, and Metalink Ltd. (NASDAQ: MTLK), a leading provider of high performance wireless and wireline broadband communication silicon solutions, today announced their cooperation to develop advanced consumer electronics products enabling unmatched wireless multimedia networking throughout the home, based on the emerging IEEE 802.11n standard. At the CES exhibition in Las Vegas this January, Haier presented concept products based on Metalink's WLANPlus(TM) technology. The demonstrations consisted of multiple videos streaming between media servers and several high-definition television sets, and drew much interest from consumer electronics buyers.

As a leading innovator, Haier selected Metalink's advanced WLANPlus technology to enable its line of networked multimedia consumer electronics products. Metalink is the first company to demonstrate robust home coverage to enable the delivery of three MPEG-2 (equivalently, six MPEG-4) HDTV streams. Metalink's WLANPlus is the first MIMO based (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) wireless chipset designed to become the infrastructure network of the broadband home, delivering exceptional data throughput over the air with full-home coverage for high definition video-distribution applications.
Metalink's 802.11n WLANPlus technology will be used by Haier for integration with its complete line of innovative home-networking solutions. The WLANPlus technology further enhances Haier's consumer electronics product offering while enabling the company to achieve a competitive advantage as the first to demonstrate multiple HDTV streams. Haier is closely cooperating with Metalink to offer its customers the most advanced solutions possible for robust and reliable distribution of multimedia throughout the home.
Metalink and Haier will be targeting their wireless home-networking products at the growing market for digital and online entertainment, including on-demand gaming, music and video services. The emerging online entertainment market, alone, is growing rapidly. In announcing its January 2006 "Digital Lifestyles: 2006 Outlook" report on U.S. online entertainment, Parks Associates predicted that market revenues for digital content services would grow by 260 percent to nearly $9 billion by 2010, driven by broadband usage and innovations in digital entertainment platforms and content services.
"The wealth of content coming into home and portable platforms will drive the next stage of home networking applications, including interoperability between home computer and consumer electronics platforms," said Kurt Scherf, vice president and principal analyst for Parks Associates. "With wireless nodes expected to account for up to 90 percent of devices connected in data networks over the next five years, the opportunities for wireless vendors are significant."
