IBM Japan Builds New Accounting System for NYK Line18 June 2006
IBM Japan today announced the implementation of NYKLine's new accounting system as part of the company's medium-termmanagement plan "New Horizon 2007" announced in March 2005. NYK Line, one of the world's leader maritime service providers, is drawingon its international network of ocean, land and air transport operationswith the aim of becoming the world's leading global logistics megacarriergroup. In support of its corporate objective, NYK Line's "New Horizon2007," focuses on three key strategies: expanding the company's maritimebusiness, evolving its logistics integration capabilities, and enhancingcorporate fundamentals including technology infrastructure and processes. As part of its corporate fundamentals focus, NYK Line contracted IBM GlobalBusiness Services to renew its accounting system and the supporting ITinfrastructure. The new accounting system standardizes and brings transparency to NYK'sfinancial processes including charter fee settlement management, fuelinventory management, container management to improve corporate complianceand reduce time spent on finance processing tasks. IBM Global BusinessServices Value Delivery Center (VDC) provided comprehensive support duringthe project including system strategy development, integration of commonprocesses across the enterprise and IT architecture expertise. To implement a system that improved responsiveness to rapidly changingmarket conditions, scaled according to throughput increases required aminimal implementation period, NYK Line selected IBM's open mainframe IBMSystem z990, Linux and SAP's ERP package. The strongest feature of IBM's mainframe z990 is its ability to run itsflagship z/OS operating system concurrently with open and industry standardtechnologies such as Linux and Java™ Linux on a single server. Anotherdistinguishing feature is the z990 offers an Integrated Facility for Linux,a central processor dedicated to Linux workloads, which allows users totemporarily turn on additional IFL engine capacity for spikes in usage, thereby enabling better cost management and utilization of IT resources. NYK Line will run its core data on its z/OS-based database and has built areliable and highly secure open system to run SAP's ERP package on Linux. With IBM's unique virtualization technology, duplicate infrastructurespreviously needed to separate the live system environment and thedevelopment system environment are no longer needed. Both environments cancoexist on a single server as multiple logical partitions can be configuredon the z990 which in turn will reduce the TCO of the company's ITinfrastructure. In addition to its robust hardware features with near-zero latency, the IBMSystem z990 has received the Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 5(EAL5) certification level for the security of its logical partitions.IBM's mainframe is the only general-purpose hardware product that hasreceived the EAL5 certification. Since each logical partition is connectedwith HiperSockets, which provides a high speed connectivity between virtualservers and a single z990, a high level of security can be maintained toavoid the risks of interception and manipulation of sensitive data thatexternal network connections are vulnerable to. Unmatched flexibility, robustness and scalability are the result of theIBM's mainframe market-leading virtualization technology. IBM pioneeredvirtualization technology in its mainframe over 40 years and today, themainframe's virtualization and collaborative capabilities remain on a levelnever before seen in the computer industry.
