IBM Launches Collaboration Center for UNIX

2 March 2006

IBM today announced the opening of the AIX

Collaboration Center (ACC). Through a two-year, $200 million investment,

IBM will use the center -- based in Austin, Texas -- to collaborate with

customers, developers, independent software vendors (ISVs), and academics

to drive innovation around AIX technology; and to develop, test and adopt

new applications and middleware for the AIX operating system.

The AIX Collaboration Center will focus on driving systems-level

innovations around key technology areas like virtualization, security,

performance and scalability, and will assist ISVs in advancing their

applications on AIX by exploiting new pSeries hardware and software

capabilities. It will offer a wide range of resources including education,

equipment, access to skilled technical consultants and remote or onsite

testing capabilities to help enable their applications for AIX and the

latest 64-bit POWER systems.

"Symantec and IBM have successfully collaborated to deliver industry

leading datacenter solutions that support customers' AIX environments,"

said Kris Hagerman, senior vice president, Storage and Server Management

Group, Symantec. "Symantec continues in its commitment to help IBM drive

additional innovation around AIX technology, particularly in

mission-critical, highly available application environments. We look

forward to participating in IBM's AIX Collaboration Center."

"SAS and IBM have a strong history of working together to ensure that SAS'

industry leading business intelligence and analytic applications take full

advantage of the underlying IBM infrastructure," said Clarke Thacher,

senior manager of UNIX research and development at SAS. "IBM's newly

formed AIX Collaboration Center will help strengthen this collaboration and

further advance SAS solutions on IBM's POWER architecture and AIX 5L

operating system."

The AIX Collaboration Center will provide customers and partners with new

programs and tools as well as early access to new technologies to refine

the capabilities and features of the AIX operating system prior to each

release. Additionally, they will have access to technical experts and

resources to help them deploy current AIX and virtualization technologies.

The AIX Collaboration Center will draw on the experience and expertise of

IBM Research, Global Services, Software Group as well as multiple external

resources to create a tight-knit community that will focus on driving

innovation around the AIX operating system and related software

technologies.

"We expect the AIX Collaboration Center to build on the current wave of

momentum around AIX in the marketplace," said Adalio Sanchez, General

Manager, IBM pSeries. "This announcement underscores IBM's strategy to

continue to lead the market and work with the community to create

technologies based on the needs of customers and partners."

The AIX Collaboration Center will be managed by Satya Sharma, an IBM

Distinguished Engineer and the chief AIX architect for the company. More
