IBM Unveils New Software to Help Organizations Improve Development Project Success5 March 2006
IBM today announced new software designed to
help organizations more effectively manage software and system development
projects across the enterprise, and to help reduce costs, manage and
control risks, and improve the rate of project success.
IBM Rational Portfolio Manager 6.2 is the industry's first project and
portfolio management solution to incorporate software development best
practices into executable project plans. The software provides users with
an analytical dashboard that helps automate decision and approval cycles
for teams while spotting trends and overlaps in projects.
Organizations are increasingly looking for ways to more easily manage and
prioritize their portfolios of projects. This is especially true for
organizations with projects that involve integrating, building or
maintaining software, which typically involves a high degree of risk.
Using the new capabilities in IBM Rational Portfolio Manager 6.2,
executives, program managers and project managers can prioritize projects,
identify overlaps, and even manage the execution of specific software
development tasks. The software helps companies make informed decisions
about which projects to pursue, based on their potential impact to the
business and availability of resources. Once a project is selected, IBM
Rational Portfolio Manager helps ensure the project is effectively managed

development process solution, is shipped with Rational Portfolio Manager
6.2. This allows users to apply industry-leading best practices to project
plans. This can save time and money by replacing time consuming,
error-prone manual approaches with proven and consistent processes and
tooling.
New Graphical Workflow Capabilities -- The Advanced Graphical Workflow
Designer allows users to quickly and easily create, review, and automate
workflow capabilities. This empowers IT departments to assign and manage
structured roles, responsibilities and tasks for each team member to best
fit the particular project and portfolio needs. The new workflow
capabilities can also help IT managers address industry regulations and
business rules in a timely and controlled manner.
New Analytics Capabilities -- Integration with the IBM Rational Team
Unifying Platform provides a dashboard for users to view data, measurements
and trends across their entire portfolio. The dashboard also assists users
in tracking and monitoring project and portfolio risks and returns,
including compliance with regulatory requirements.
New standards-based API toolkit -- This software development toolkit
enables team members to connect with external systems, such as resource or
financial management systems, to build integrations and minimize custom
work for each client.
