IBM Unveils Revolutionary Cell Broadband Engine Computer9 February 2006
At a press conference in New York today,IBM® introduced a blade computing system based on the Cell BroadbandEngine™ (Cell BE). The IBM branded Cell BE-based system is designed forbusinesses that need the dense computing power and unique capabilities ofthe Cell BE processor to tackle tasks involving graphic-intensive, numericapplications. Based on the Power Architecture™, the Cell BE processor was developed incollaboration with IBM, Sony Corporation, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.(Sony and Sony Computer Entertainment collectively referred to as SonyGroup), and Toshiba Corporation. The Cell BE processor is an advancedPower Architecture-based microprocessor optimized for compute-intensiveworkloads and broadband media applications targeted for computerentertainment, movies and other forms of digital content. (Click here for details) IBM Researcher Ronald Ridgeway examines a new IBM computer previewed today containing the powerful Cell microprocessor. Effectively a 'supercomputer on a chip' the Cell processor is the most sophisticated chip ever created. It is expected to dramatically improve the use of visual graphics in the entertainment, medical imaging, aerospace and defense industries. The Cell BE-based system was previewed today at IBM's launch of newBladeCenter® products in New York City. The system will rely on the CellBE processor to accelerate key algorithms like 3D rendering, compression, and encryption, to help companies create and run highly visual, immersive,real-time applications. Cell BE's breakthrough multi-core architecture and ultra high-speedcommunications capabilities deliver vastly improved, real-time response forentertainment and rich media applications. Effectively delivering'supercomputer-like performance' by incorporating advanced multi-processingtechnologies used in IBM's sophisticated servers, Cell BE is especiallysuitable for high performance workloads across a number of industriesincluding digital media, medical imaging, aerospace, defense andcommunications. The combination of IBM's BladeCenter system with the Cell BE processor isan example of IBM's continuing collaboration with clients to help themcreate breakthrough solutions using IBM technology and expertise. IBMrecently announced it is collaborating with Mercury Computer Systems toenable them to build Cell BE-based solutions targeted at multipleindustries, IBM will also continue to work with the broader communitythrough Blade.org, Power.org and open standards to bring additional CellBE-based solutions to market. Product Availability IBM intends to make the Cell BE-based system available for direct purchasebeginning in the third quarter of 2006, with availability via special bidsnow.
