Intel Boosts Energy-Efficient Performance16 March 2006
Intel Boosts Energy-Efficient Performance With FirstDual-Core Low-Voltage Intel® Xeon® Processor IntelCorporation is outfitting server, storage andtelecommunications equipment makers with a new ingredientfor squeezing more performance from space- andpower-constrained environments. It is the firstlow-voltage Intel Xeon processor to combine dual-coretechnology with Intel s innovative power managementcapabilities, helping to boost energy-efficiency and up totwo to four times the performance-per-watt of previous IntelXeon processors and platforms.** The need for rawcomputing performance has evolved into a drive forenergy-efficient performance to meet people s expandingdemands -- whether for smaller devices, lower cooling billsor better price/performance per watt. Energy-efficientperformance enables equipment manufacturers to optimallybalance processing capabilities with power and spaceconstraints to help meet those demands. Intel is drivinginnovations in multi-core computing architectures through acombination of silicon, architecture, platform and softwareinnovations to enable new levels of performance, capabilities and energy efficiency. With total dissipatedpower (TDP) of 31 watts, the new low-voltage Dual-Core IntelXeon processor is ideal for deployments requiring highcompute density and power optimisation, includingsingle-height (1U) chassis and blade servers, SAN and NASsolutions and network infrastructure equipment. The newprocessor excels at handling demanding multi-threaded,multi-tasking applications such as high-performancecomputing and financial services. "The low-voltageDual-Core Intel Xeon processor s combined enhancements inperformance and energy efficiency enhancements, along withthe efficient power and cooling design of IBM sindustry-leading BladeCenter,* deliver a leadership integerperformance-per-watt solution," said Doug Balog, vicepresident and business line executive, IBM BladeCenter. "The new IBM BladeCenter Ultra Low Power HS20 blade* is asolid example of the innovation being brought to marketthrough Intel and IBM s blade collaboration." Toaccelerate time to market for telecommunications equipmentmakers and original equipment manufacturers, Intel alsoplans to introduce the AdvancedTCA-compliant IntelNetStructure® MPCBL0040 Single Board Computer (SBC). Thisnew, high-density-compute SBC features two of the newlow-voltage Intel Xeon processors, which equates to fourhigh-performance cores per SBC. With the performance boostof the new dual-core processor, the MPCBL0040 is expected toservice far more transactions and subscribers per systemthan previous generation products, *** which can helpsignificantly reduce the cost per subscriber and/ortransaction and total cost of ownership. This powerfulprocessing capability, offered in the AdvancedTCA standard,is ideal for applications where transaction and subscriberload can increase dramatically in a very short time, such asIP Multimedia Services (IMS), Internet Protocol Television(IPTV) and Wireless Control Plane applications. "HP ishelping operators and equipment providers take advantage ofthe trends that are reshaping the industry, such as theevolution toward open, modular networks, as well as blended,content-rich services and easy-to-use personal devices,"said Ananda Subbiah, vice president, worldwide solutions,Network and Service Provider Business, HP. "Theperformance and innovation of Intel AdvancedTCA buildingblocks, combined with the comprehensive services and supportof the HP Advanced Open Telecom Platform, are enablingcustomers to evolve their networks in the most strategic,cost-effective way." Intel is also planning to offer ablade server solution powered by up to two of the newDual-Core Intel Xeon processors LV for ultra-dense,low-power environments where density is limited by power andcooling capabilities. The Intel Server Compute BladeSBXD62 will enable server OEMs and resellers to offer theirsmall- and medium-sized business customers a blade serverplatform to help reduce operational costs and extend ITresources through improved price/performance per watt, operational efficiencies, deployment flexibility andsimplified management. The Dual-Core Intel Xeon processorLV 2.0GHz and 1.66GHz are available from Intel now forUS$423 and US$209 per unit, respectively, in 1,000-unitquantities. The Intel NetStructure MPCBL0040 Single BoardComputer is expected to be available in the second quarterwith an initial price from Intel of US$4,495 per unit. The Intel Server Compute Blade SBXD62 is expected to shipin April with an initial price from Intel of US$945 per unit(price does not include processor, heat sink, memory or harddrive).**** For more information about low-voltage Dual-CoreIntel Xeon processors and platforms, please visitwww.intel.com/design/intarch/xeonlv2sbc. The Bill would reduce the number of MPs to 100 at the next election. According to Ms Stewart's Bill the number of electorate and Maori seats would remain the same whilst list MPs would shrink dramatically. In this situation a party - for example the Maori Party - that received a small amount of the party vote and a large amount of electorate seats would end up in a stronger position than they currently hold.
