ISC Star-P Software to Run on HP ProLiant Servers and Clusters

26 July 2006

Interactive Supercomputing Inc. (ISC) today announced that its Star-P(TM) interactive supercomputing software will now be available on HP ProLiant servers, HP BladeSystem solutions and HP Cluster Platform systems that are based on dual-core x86-64 processors -- AMD's Opteron and Intel's recently announced Xeon 5100.

Star-P is an interactive parallel computing platform that enables scientists, engineers and other researchers to code algorithms and models on their desktops using familiar mathematical software packages such as MathWorks' MATLAB(R), and run them instantly and interactively on parallel high performance computers (HPCs).

Today's announcement continues ISC's strategy of making supercomputing more economical and accessible for a wider range of technical computing users by working with leading computer OEMs. According to the most recent IDC report on the worldwide high performance computing market, HP is the revenue leader with more than 33 percent of overall market share.(1) Support for HP ProLiant servers and HP BladeSystem server blades enables users, who previously didn't have the budgets and programming knowledge, to tap the power of parallel computing clusters to solve their growing scientific and engineering problems.

Among the systems for which Star-P now will be available is the recently announced HP BladeSystem c-Class, which provides the fastest blade system solution for high performance computing. The new HP BladeSystem is the first blade solution to support 4X DDR Infiniband, the industry's fastest blade server interconnect, delivering up to 20 Gbps bandwidth in each direction.

"HP ProLiant servers and HP BladeSystem server blades are among the most prevalent HPCs in the technical computing market," said David Gibson, ISC's vice president of sales. "HP is leading the industry in rapid application development of parallel systems. Star-P will help extend that lead to a wider base of engineers and scientists."

Star-P eliminates the need to re-program the applications in C, FORTRAN or MPI languages to run on parallel computers. Re-programming typically takes months to years to complete for complex and computationally intensive problems. Star-P automatically connects desktop applications to ProLiant servers and blade systems and parallelizes the application code on the fly. This enables users to scale their applications across any multi-processor system or parallel HP ProLiant cluster in real time. Using Star-P users can tackle much larger problems on their desktops than ever before possible, while arriving at a solution in a fraction of the time.

"We teamed with ISC because Star-P delivers the best of both worlds to technical computing users -- the ability to work in a familiar, desktop environment while taking advantage of the tremendous computing power of our parallel ProLiant systems," said Ed Turkel, product and technology marketing manager, High Performance Computing Group, HP. "We believe our combined platforms will further help bring supercomputing to the masses."

Pricing and availability

Star-P for HP ProLiant servers will be available in August 2006 with a list price starting at $7,995 for a 4-socket server license. Star-P is certified for ProLiant blade servers including BL25P, BL35P and BL45P models; rack-mounted ProLiant server models DL145, DL385 and DL585; and BladeSystem c- Class servers including the BL460c and BL480c blade systems.

About Interactive Supercomputing

Interactive Supercomputing (ISC) launched in 2004 to commercialize Star-P, an interactive parallel computing platform. With automatic parallelization and interactive execution of existing desktop simulation applications, Star-P merges two previously distinct environments -- desktop computers and high performance servers -- into one. Based in Waltham, Mass., the privately held company markets Star-P for a range of security, intelligence, manufacturing, energy, biomedical, financial, and scientific research applications.
