Mass Notification Service Provider 3n Relies Upon Oracle(R) 10g Software to Support Growing Business

7 April 2006

3n (National Notification Network), a leading provider of mass notification systems, depends upon Oracle(R) 10g infrastructure software on Linux to help ensure that enterprises, government agencies and municipalities, and schools can communicate reliably with their constituents. The 3n mass notification system improves customers' communication processes by enabling one person via a single call or Web browser to deliver critical information to thousands of people anywhere, any time, and on any device -- including phones (home, work and cell), email, instant messenger, SMS, fax, computer, PDAs, and BlackBerrys(R) -- using voice and text communications.

Organizations count on 3n as an effective service for business continuity, emergency response and management, and daily business activities when they need to communicate effectively and reliably with a small or large audience in a short time. The 3n mass notification system can cycle through each and every communication device available until the message is delivered and confirmed by the recipient. In many cases, 3n's system has reduced the length of time it takes organizations to notify its audiences from hours or days to minutes. The company uses an Application Service Provider model, enabling customers to access the system via the Internet as well as through an automated attendant or live operator.

"When we initially decided to deploy our mass notification system on Oracle 10g's clustering technology, we had three criteria in mind," said Kim Terry, Chief Information Officer, 3n. "We needed a reliable service with built-in redundancy and the capabilities to pass the technical muster required by the Fortune 1000 businesses and government agencies we work with -- without high-cost hardware."

Recognizing the crucial need for a highly reliable technology infrastructure, 3n upgraded to Oracle Database 10g, Oracle Real Application Clusters and Oracle Application Server 10g in January 2006. It operates an Oracle database cluster of Dell servers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 along with EMC storage attached network to power its Java-based InstaCom application. In addition, 3n utilizes Oracle Data Guard to replicate data from its data center in California to a standby system located in the Rocky Mountains, thereby providing service continuity in the event of a complete data center outage.

3n initially selected Oracle's clustering technology to enable the company to optimize the availability and scalability of its mission-critical application. Increasingly, 3n will rely on Oracle Database 10g and Oracle Real Application Clusters to scale its system by incrementally adding low-cost, industry-standard servers to support its burgeoning business. In 2005, the Glendale, California-based company more than doubled its customer base.

3n markets its services to three primary customer segments - corporations (primarily financial services, health care and utilities), education (K-12 and higher education), and government agencies and municipalities (federal, state and local). Customers apply the 3n mass notification system to a range of critical communication activities, such as:

* Communicating quickly with employees and customers during an emergency

and confirming message receipt;

* Staffing shifts or projects when temporary or replacement workers are

needed to fill vacated spots or spikes in demand;

* Notifying parents about students missing class; and,

* Alerting residents to a serious situation, such as a toxic spill or

impending storm.
