Media alert - Electronics retailers get behind aid efforts for Asia30 December 2004
Over the past few days, relief efforts for the devastating earthquake and resulting tsunamis that struck Sri Lanka, southern India, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia, have been growing, but more is needed. The Red Cross is appealing to Canadians to assist the victims of this disaster through cash donations and in response, two electronics retailers are stepping forward to help them out. Best Buy Canada Ltd., which operates the Future Shop and Best Buy chains in Canada, has pledged $50,000 to the relief effort to kick start a collection campaign that will run in their stores over the coming weeks. Associates in the stores and their customers can come into any one of the 144 locations and make a donation through the cash register, either on its own or as part of a regular purchase. In turn, the company will match these individual donations up to a total corporate donation of $100,000. "This disaster hits close to home for many of our 15,000 associates and it's important that we play some role in helping their friends and family get through it," said Kevin Layden, President and COO of Best Buy Canada Ltd. "Donations from the company, our associates and our customers will help the Canadian Red Cross get much needed supplies, food and water to the more than one million people affected." All Future Shop and Best Buy stores across Canada will be set up to accept donations starting this weekend. Donations will be accepted at store cash registers through January and all money collected will be forwarded directly to the Canadian Red Cross to support the Asia Earthquake and Tsunamis Relief Fund. Customers who make a donation over $10 through a Future Shop or Best Buy store can get an official tax receipt by taking their store receipt to their local Red Cross office.
