Network Chemistry Delivers Industry's First Enterprise Product to Actively Enforce Wireless Security on Mobile Laptops Anywhere6 December 2005
Network Chemistry Inc., the wireless security experts, today announced RFprotect™ Endpoint, the first automated wireless threat protection solution for enterprise mobile laptops. The highly scalable product centrally manages and sets policy for all laptops to actively enforce wireless security best practices when the laptops are in the office, at home, and on the road. The new solution maintains mobile data privacy and enforces security compliance regulations by extending wireless security beyond the enterprise network perimeter, and safeguarding wireless use from risky configuration errors. Complimenting existing laptop security suites, RFprotect Endpoint protects all wireless networking options including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, EVDO, HSDPA, and GPRS/EDGE, as well as IrDA, Ethernet, and dial-up.
RFprotect Endpoint addresses security concerns about the use of wireless-enabled laptops by business travelers, the growing amount of confidential data residing on laptops, and the ease with which end users can engage in risky wireless behavior. The value of connectivity typically outweighs concerns about security, as users need to get work done while at home or while traveling. In a survey of more than 2,000 business travelers in the U.S., the leading research group, Gartner, found that 25 percent of respondents used hotspots while traveling on business. Furthermore, about two-thirds of those who use hotspots connect to online services via Wi-Fi at least once a day when traveling, and more than one-third of Wi-Fi users connect to hotspots more than ten times a year. The liability and privacy concerns raised by the use of unsecured hotspots, as well as new legislation requiring public disclosure of the mishandling of personal information, highlight the need for extending wireless security outside of the enterprise perimeter.
"Businesses have spent millions securing their data centers, applications, and users from malicious activity," said Lisa Phifer, vice president of Core Competence. "However, with the exponential growth of wireless, they now have an entirely new vector to defend. A centrally managed solution such as Network Chemistry's RFprotect Endpoint can help employers regain control by enforcing security policies on wireless clients -- even those using remote networks."
Enterprise-class Automated Threat Protection
RFprotect Endpoint pioneers the use of ConnectGuard™ technology to actively prevent malicious hackers and employees from compromising data privacy and network integrity, either deliberately or inadvertently. The software guards wireless connections on laptops by limiting them to pre-approved network connections and prevents wireless connections to rogue APs, ad hocs, and evil-twin attackers. Furthermore, the product can be configured to keep wireless connections secure anywhere a laptop is used by ensuring the use of VPNs when necessary. This policy prevents split-tunneling vulnerabilities and thus eliminates the risk that some of the wireless network traffic runs in the clear and is at risk of being intercepted.
RFprotect Endpoint is specifically designed for the scalability, performance, and manageability that enterprises require. The endpoint agent software simplifies client manageability by being fully compatible with existing endpoint security mechanisms, wireless network adaptors, and the most common releases of Windows software. The centralized policy management software can automatically enforce wireless security across thousands of laptop endpoints without confronting users with difficult security decisions. And to ensure that policy is always being enforced, end users cannot disable RFprotect Endpoint or modify the configuration settings. RFprotect Endpoint logs detailed usage information including where, when, and how networks were accessed on the road. Powerful reporting capabilities allow network security administrators to audit network use by laptop and help track down lost or stolen devices.
The solution is also fully integrated with the award-winning RFprotect Distributed. RFprotect Distributed protects against wireless threats in and around enterprise facilities while RFprotect Endpoint protects mobile users when they take their wireless laptops outside the facilities. The two products are integrated through single policy management (PolicyEnforce™), usage database, and reporting capabilities.
"RFprotect Endpoint is the only solution that specifically addresses a top threat to data privacy in organizations -- the unsecured use of wireless-enabled laptops outside the enterprise," said Brian de Haaff, vice president of product management and marketing at Network Chemistry. "It is all too common for employees to unwittingly reconfigure their laptops, often leaving them wide open to hackers. RFprotect Endpoint puts a centrally controlled security guard in every laptop to keep wireless connections safe anytime, anywhere."
