New Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMediaCard (MMC) Controllers from Silicon Motion Set New Performance Standards11 October 2005

Technology Corporation (Nasdaq: SIMO; the ''Company''), a leading fabless
semiconductor company that designs, develops, and markets universally
compatible, high-performance, low-power semiconductor solutions for the
multimedia consumer electronics market, today announced the availability of a
new generation of high performance flash card controllers for use in Secure
Digital (SD) cards and MultiMediaCards (MMC).
The new SM265 controller in dual channel mode delivers a read transfer
rate of 34 megabytes (MB) per second (200x) and a write transfer rate of 25 MB
per second (166x). The new SM266 controller in dual channel mode achieves
read transfer rate of 22.5 MB per second (150x) and a write transfer rate of
20 MB per second (133x).
Both SM265 and SM266 controllers are capable of supporting a wide variety
of NAND flash memory, including single level cell (SLC) and multilevel cell
(MLC) technology, and both 8-bit and16-bit NAND flash interfaces. Both
controllers have Reed-Solomon error correcting code (ECC) built into the
hardware to achieve data retention without compromising performance.
The SM265 controller is compliant with MMC 3.3, 4.0, and 4.1
specifications. The SM266 controller complies with SD 1.1 specifications and
includes support for CPRM (Content Protection for Recordable Media) to enforce
copyright protection.
In keeping with Silicon Motion's strength of delivering universal
compatibility, both SM265 and SM266 controllers have been extensively and
successfully tested for compatibility with almost one thousand host devices,
including PDAs, card readers, digital still cameras, digital video cameras,
mobile phones, MP3 players, personal computers, printers, and other electronic
devices that accept flash memory cards.
