Nvidia News:NVIDIA® GoForce® 5500 Architecture Embraced by Key Mobile Developers13 February 2006
NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq:NVDA), the worldwide leader in programmable graphics processor technologies, today announced the demonstration of the next wave of multimedia applications for 3G phones by some of the world’s most influential game developers. The demonstrations signify a major shift in the mobile market where developers are beginning to deliver true, native 3D gaming to the 3G mobile phone market.
For the first time ever, Electronic Arts (EA) will demonstrate the OpenGL ES title, Need for Speed Most Wanted. The visual experience of this high octane racing title has been specially enhanced for the NVIDIA GoForce 5500 handheld graphics processing unit (GPU), providing fast, fluid framerates and high resolution VGA support. The title also demonstrates special effects such as motion blur and reflections, all made possible through hardware-specific optimizations, delivering a truly exhilarating gaming experience.
"The interest in advanced mobile graphics is incredible. Better games, richer graphics, amazing video, and immersive audio will take handheld content to entirely new depths with experiences that are as compelling as PCs or consoles," said Brian Bruning, director of handheld developer content at NVIDIA. In addition to EA, NVIDIA will also play host to the Code Monkeys and their innovative title, Jump which is based on the radical new extreme sport, "Free Running", where players are put into a race against each other across inner-city rooftops. The title boasts high resolution texture maps for extra detail, high polygon models for more realistic characters, and special effects for dynamic and immersive environments.
"As a long time developer of console games, the Code Monkeys are excited to be working with the NVIDIA GoForce 5500 GPU," said Mark Kirkby, technical director of the Code Monkeys. "This amazing piece of technology is the size of my fingernail, and its processing power has allowed us to make big improvements to the realism of "Jump" and incorporate special effects and visuals that we didn't think were possible on a handheld device."
The visual masterpiece, Siege, from Denied Reality will also be on show for the first time at 3GSM. The catapult-themed game leverages the strengths of NVIDIA GoForce shader technology, and uses high polygon counts, large texture memory, and impressive audio to create a world so realistic that it truly illustrates the path that mobile 3D graphics will take in the future.
The PC and console classic, Quake III Arena, will also be making its GoForce debut appearance at 3GSM. Fast paced and graphics intensive—Quake III Arena is a powerful test of the graphics horsepower of the NVIDIA GoForce 5500. Based on the Game Source code from id Software, this accurately-ported demo uses texture compression, which allows for higher resolution texture maps and console-class frame rates and resolutions.
As a demonstration of how 3D can be used in a non-gaming environment, Go-Figure will demonstrate Go Face- It, a core component of their real-time 3D PhoneToys™ package. Go Face-It allows phone users to create a lifelike 3D face by personalizing expressions, hairstyles, accessories, and more. Go Face-It harnesses the power of the NVIDIA GoForce 5500 to process high-resolution textures and polygons and produce ultra-real advanced animations.
