OpenPeak Supports Home and Office Device Control Via Ciscos Family of Internet Protocol

6 January 2005

OpenPeak Inc., a leading provider of software enabling control of digital content, consumer electronics and systems in the Digital Home, today announced its flagship Thinking Homes software supports control of various devices in the home or office via Cisco's 79xx Series Internet Protocol (IP) phone systems.

"If you consider that every Cisco 79xx Series IP phone you might have in a home or office can now serve as a controller for media, lighting, HVAC, consumer electronics and other systems, you have a compelling solution that offers interoperability and convenience to the user," said Andrew Lona, OpenPeak's Chief Marketing Officer. "As home and business markets more broadly embrace IP telephony and the market grows, there will be a natural desire to add functionality to those IP phone systems. Thinking Homes control software on Cisco IP phones is a high-value function that's easily integrated," he added.

In addition to simply being integrated into Cisco IP phone systems, OpenPeak software can also run on Linksys wireless-G access points. (Linksys is a subsidiary of Cisco Systems, Inc.) In this environment, existing Linksys WRT54GS models can run an OpenPeak software suite that includes the Thinking Homes software server, a Rendezvous server and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) server. The Linksys access point requires no modification and all of its existing functionality remains in place. But with the OpenPeak software running on the access point, the user now has seamless control of consumer electronics, media from Apple iTunes, Microsoft Media Connect and any UPnP media server or player. This system also automatically detects the presence of Cisco 79xx Series IP phones and provides an interface for setting up the phones, eliminating the need for a systems integrator. When a new phone is detected, any PC or PDA on the network can be used to easily set up phone extensions, voice mail boxes and other calling features via the Thinking Homes software interface.

Paul O'Donovan, Principal Analyst at Gartner, said, "OpenPeak has incorporated the key elements of simplicity, ease-of-use and low cost in developing its offerings."
