Oracle(R) Database 10g Release 2 Available for Solaris 10 on x64 Platforms

21 April 2006

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced that Oracle(R) Database 10g Release 2 is now available for the Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS) on the x64 (x86, 64-bit) platform. Sun and Oracle share tens of thousands of joint customers, and today's announcement gives these customers greater flexibility in choosing the type of environment that best fits their needs, while benefiting from the performance advantages delivered in the most advanced operating system on the planet, the Solaris 10 OS.

"This announcement is indicative of the long standing commitment by Sun and Oracle to meet the changing needs of our joint customers," said Willie Hardie, vice president, Database Product Marketing at Oracle. "Customers of all sizes, from small and mid-size business to large enterprises have a choice of both the SPARC and x86 platforms for their Oracle Database applications on Solaris."

"Sun and Oracle have enjoyed a working history that spans over 20 years, based on a shared belief in the value of open, standards-based computing," said Stephen Borcich, vice president, partner marketing, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "We built the Solaris 10 OS with Oracle, and database customers, in mind, including built-in features like Predictive Self-Healing, Solaris Containers, Solaris Dynamic Tracing (DTrace), User Rights Management, clustering, and Symmetric Multiprocessing that make it ideal for hosting databases."

Sun Fire x64 Servers

In just under two years, Sun has shown strong growth in the x64 server space, moving from offering no systems to securing the number five position with $100M quarterly revenue in x86, 64-bit servers, according to market research firm IDC. Sun anticipates this momentum will continue with its recently introduced "Galaxy" Sun Fire(TM) X4100 and Sun Fire X4200 servers powered by AMD Opteron(TM) processors with Direct Connect Architecture. These servers offer up to twice the performance, consume about one-third the power and are one-quarter the size of similar servers from competitive vendors -- delivering a combination of performance, features and value to customers that is not available from any other server supplier.

Oracle and Sun work together to deliver optimal performance, innovation and value to the customer through joint engineering efforts, sales and service. For more information about the Oracle Sun alliance, go to http://www.sun.com/oracle or http://www.oracle.com/sun.
