RASILIENT Systems Qualifies Hitachi's 500 GB Hard Drives for use With its RASTOR 4000 Storage Platform - Announces General Availability

1 December 2005

RASILIENT Systems, Inc. an innovator in modular RAID storage systems and software for the OEM market, announced today that it has qualified Hitachi's new Deskstar 500 GB Serial ATA II hard drive for its RASTOR 4000 Storage Platform, increasing its raw storage capacity to 7.5 TB in a 3U form factor. "We're pleased to qualify Hitachi's new 500 GB drives for use in the RASTOR 4000," said Sean Chang, president and CEO of RASILIENT Systems. "The new drive technology brings with it a number of Serial ATA II features that will increase our product's price vs. performance for the small-to-medium size storage market, including a 3 Gb/s interface that rivals enterprise-level SCSI drives; 300 MB/s burst data rate for faster data access; staggered or delayed spin-up that enables the host to individually "spin-up" drives in multi-drive configurations; Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS), a technology used to ensure drive performance in high rotational vibration environments, where there are multiple drives in a single enclosure; a single-chip native SATA chipset and Native Command Queuing (NCQ), which enables fast data transfer rates for enterprise ATA and other performance-based applications." The RASILIENT Systems' RASTOR 4000 Storage Platform, which can be shipped with the new 500 GB SATA II equipped drives, integrates an open architecture hardware platform with custom-tuned LINUX software to emulate full RAID and volume management functionality, iSCSI protocol and active-active failover capabilities. Added Chang, "The advantages to our approach are lower cost; greater customization for OEMs since it's easier to tune, port and upgrade; less complexity and higher serviceability -- which creates unique product differentiation and gives our OEM partners a higher-degree of value-add for their customer base." The RASTOR 4000 Storage Platform is based on integrating low-cost iSCSI and SATA II technologies to build a highly available, no single point of failure storage system from ground up. The unit is offered in a 3U rack mount form factor with the ability to scale to 7.5 TB of raw storage capacity using 15 dual-ported SATA II 500 GB hard disk modules. The system supports 3.0 Gb/s SATA II drives and offers multiple RAID configurations (RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10), support for up to 256 LUNs and offers a full suite of storage provisioning, and security features. DAS, NAS and SAN functionality are supported and the unit provides iSCSI or FC host connectivity within the same box. Commodity-based PC server technologies ensure affordability, an open architecture, simple maintenance and tremendous flexibility. In addition, the RASTOR 4000 has the ability to support both IP SAN and FC SAN so that the same LUNs (Logical Unit Number) can be seen and accessed from either IP or FC SAN. About RASILIENT Systems RASILIENT designs and manufacturers low cost, high availability storage platforms and system software for the OEM market worldwide. RASILIENT's enterprise-class storage technology costs a fraction of competitive alternatives. By combining high availability storage hardware and intelligent software, RASILIENT provides OEM customers with storage solutions that are unmatched in reliability, cost and performance.
