Ricoh Corporation, a leading provider of digital office equipment, announced today that for the second year in a row, it will present the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award (RSDA) at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) sponsored by Agilent Technologies on May 11, 2006. This year's event will be held at the Indiana Convention Center from Sunday, May 7, through Friday, May 12, in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Intel ISEF 2006 is the world's largest annual celebration of science for high school students. The Intel ISEF brings together nearly 1,500 students from over 40 nations to compete for $4 million in scholarships and other awards for their love of science, including internships and grants for scientific field trips. The International Science and Engineering Fair was founded in 1950, and has been administered since by Science Service, a non- profit organization dedicated to advancing the understanding and appreciation of science around the globe. A team of 15 judges comprised of engineers, scientists, business professionals and educators will review entries among all the general award categories to determine the winner of the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award. The entry whose principles and technical innovations are deemed most likely to foment environmentally-friendly practices and social responsibility among businesses will be presented with this prestigious award. While celebrating new ideas and innovation, the award is also expected to raise awareness about the growing need for sustainable development. "In keeping with our commitment to technological excellence and the protection of the environment, we at Ricoh see our sponsorship of the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award as a vital step in educating future business leaders about the importance of pairing innovation with social responsibility," said Michael W. Sarasin, Director, Corporate Quality Assurance and Environmental Management Division, Ricoh Corporation. "We are proud to share our resources with the Intel ISEF team to educate the public about sustainable development via Ricoh's Web site http://www.ricoh-sustainability.com." Ricoh's presence at this year's fair will be marked by the company's commitment to educating visitors about the importance of sustainable development. To that end, Ricoh is sponsoring the Ricoh Sustainability Portal, a state-of-the-art center featuring essential information on issues in sustainable development and environmental science. The Sustainability Portal will allow visitors to talk with Max Green, an animated, interactive figure. Max is a science fair finalist from the future whose successful time travel project allows him to visit with modern day science fair participants in real time. The Sustainability Portal will also host a "Shop Talk" presentation on May 9th that will explore the role of science and science education in transforming current environmental, social and economic systems to become aligned towards a sustainable world. Ricoh will also be underwriting and presenting the Environmental Science category awards on Friday, May 12th. Sustainable Development refers to development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs. It focuses on economic development that goes hand-in-hand with ecological and social integrity. Sustainable Development is less of a program and more of a multifaceted approach to managing our environmental, economic, and social resources for the long term. In simplest terms, it means adding some new considerations to our everyday decisions. In business, it means triple bottom line reporting, melding the financial health of a company with its social and environmental responsibilities.
