Computer glitch puts bank in bind
A computer error is keeping thousands of Capital City Bank customers from accessing their account information electronically.
"We can process checks and deposits," bank President Tom Barron said. "That's not interfered with. You just don't have the online access."
The problem apparently surfaced Tuesday or early Wednesday and hadn't been corrected by late Thursday afternoon. ATM users, people who check their accounts via computer and those who conducted business via telephone were not able to access accounts. Bank employees were also affected by the glitch.
Capital City Bank Group has 60 banking offices, five mortgage-lending offices, 77 ATMs and 11 Bank 'N Shop locations in Florida, Georgia and Alabama. All offices were affected by the computer problem.
Ray Slaton of Tallahassee said he first noticed the problem when he called the bank's automated-teller phone system Tuesday.
"You would get ... a welcome message," Slaton said. "But when I pressed 1 to enter the system, I got a message that said, 'The system is temporarily down.'"
The bank president said it was not apparent what caused the problem, but no new software or hardware had been added recently.
