Silicon Image SiI 1930 and SiI 1390 HDMI Transmitters Bring PCs Seamless Digital Connectivity With High-Definition Consumer Electronics

6 March 2006

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 3 -- Silicon Image, Inc. (Nasdaq: SIMG), a leader in the secure distribution, presentation and storage of high-definition content, today announced that leading PC manufacturers ASUSTek Computer Inc. and Hitachi Ltd. have selected the SiI 1930 and SiI 1390 HDMI transmitters for their multimedia desktop and notebook PCs, giving their customers unparalleled access to a new world of premium digital content.

PCs with HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) allow consumers to transmit the highest quality premium digital audio and video content, such as HD movies from HD-DVD or Blu-ray drives and HDTV tuners, to HDTVs and other displays. Silicon Image's SiI 1930 and SiI 1390 HDMI transmitters are the only full bandwidth HDMI encoders designed specifically for the PC platform. The SiI 1930 supports a TMDS input interface with discrete graphics processors, while the SiI 1390 supports Intel's SDVO interface with integrated graphics controllers.

"HDMI is the only practical way for a source device to connect to HDTVs," said Joseph C. Lee, director of product marketing for PC and display products at Silicon Image. "These products enable PCs to unleash the high quality video and audio performance that PCs have long been capable of delivering for rich media content such as high definition movies and multi-channel audio formats. Silicon Image is committed to creating and enabling a fully-connected, HD content-ready digital living room."

Consumer electronics sources and PC graphics platforms have very distinct audio and video requirements. Silicon Image was the first to market with HDMI and DVI-HDCP transmitters designed specifically for PC platforms that interface seamlessly to discrete and integrated graphics controllers, demonstrating both the company's dedication to the HDMI market and underscoring its ongoing commitment to offering cost-effective HDMI products optimized for specific applications.

Throughout the PC industry, HDMI technology enabled by the SiI 1390 and SiI 1930 is gaining broad acceptance. The media PC market is poised for accelerated growth, as PC platforms that include or are upgradeable with high definition and multimedia capabilities will require connectivity to HDTVs.

"HDMI is the de facto interface for connectivity to digital TVs," said Ken Pan, ASUSTek notebook product manager. "The SiI 1930 HDMI transmitter enables multimedia notebooks to deliver HD content with the highest digital video and audio quality." ASUSTek makes 38% of world's motherboards, and is the world's fourth-largest notebook manufacturer.

HDMI with High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) enables PC OEMs to make PCs more CE-friendly and HD content ready, providing ample opportunity for Silicon Image customers to successfully market their products in the CE space.

"HDMI is the obvious connectivity solution for our multimedia PCs, which bring CE convergence," said Koichi Nakai, general manager of Hitachi Ltd.'s Ubiquitous Platform Systems Division. "The SiI1390 HDMI transmitter provides our media PCs with the capability to display rich HD content and become the center of the digital home." Hitachi currently has two models in its Prius Deck family of PCs supporting HDMI output, DH75N and DH73N.

Pricing and Availability

The SiI 1390 and SiI 1930 are packaged as 64-pin lead-free TQFPs with Epad and are priced at $6.50 in 10K quantities. The chips are sampling and in full production.
