Silicon Valley CEOs 'Speed Shop' for Underprivileged Children25 November 2005
The Family Giving Tree, a Bay Area non-profit dedicated to improving the quality of children's lives through its Holiday Wish Program, today announced its first ever Silicon Valley CEO Shopping Challenge taking place Friday, Dec. 2, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the Sunnyvale Town Center Target store. Led by National Semiconductor CEO and Family Giving Tree Board of Advisors Co-Chair Brian Halla, the CEO Shopping Challenge pits senior executives from six prominent Silicon Valley-based companies against each other in a holiday-themed retail battle. The following CEOs will take the challenge: -- Mike Fister, Cadence Design Systems -- Paul Otellini, Intel -- Brian Halla, National Semiconductor -- Jen-Hsun Huang, NVIDIA -- Ed Colligan, Palm -- Eli Harari, SanDisk The goal of the CEO Shopping Challenge is for a team of four executives to locate, gather and ultimately purchase as many gifts as possible for deserving Bay Area children. Each participating company will have a tree full of Family Giving Tree wish cards located near the second-floor toy section in Target. The wish cards will focus on popular items such as children's toys and electronics. At the end of the 30-minute shopping period, each CEO will be responsible for purchasing their team's gifts, which will then be distributed through the Family Giving Tree. The team who fulfills the most wish cards will be named the CEO Shopping Challenge champion. The need for holiday gifts is especially great this year as the number of Bay Area companies hosting trees has fallen by 15 percent while the number of wish card requests has increased considerably. Since 2004, 5000 more children have registered to receive gifts. Ultimately, the Family Giving Tree wants to raise awareness of its holiday wish card program and encourage more organizations such as businesses, schools and churches, to assist them by hosting their own wish trees to collect gifts for deserving individuals. About The Family Giving Tree Founded in 1990, The Family Giving Tree began as a dream and class project of San Jose State University MBA students Jennifer Cullenbine and Todd Yoshida. In its first year, the wish card program served just 300 children and adults. For the 2004 holiday season (its 15th year), over 55,000 individuals received gifts through the holiday wish program. The Family Giving Tree serves as a clearing house for other social service organizations. Each year in the fall, FGT receives individual 'wishes' from the agencies it serves. Host companies, schools, banks and churches then act as collection centers for gifts, allowing individuals to become involved on a very personal level with giving. During the month of December, nearly 5000 volunteer "elves" gather to help collect, sort, wrap and distribute the many gifts the host organizations have accumulated during their gift drives. FGT is unique in that it has a full time staff of only 5 and relies on so many volunteers and community supporters to accomplish its goals each year.
