SMART Modular Technologies Extends Lineup of DDR2 Small Modules With New Registered and Unbuffered ECC SO-DIMMs8 October 2006
SMART Modular Technologies (NASDAQ: SMOD), a leading independent manufacturer of memory modules, embedded computing subsystems and TFT-LCD display products, announces the addition of registered SO-DIMMs (or SO-RDIMMs) and unbuffered ECC SO-DIMMs (or SO-CDIMMs) to its DDR2 Small Module product family. The addition of these industry-standard modules to SMART's existing product lineup is in response to the need for small form factor and error correcting code (ECC) modules in networking and embedded computing applications. SO-RDIMMs and SO-CDIMMs are typically used for Advanced Mezzanine and PCI cards, ATCA, telecom, and server blade systems that have less than half an inch of height allowance. According to an April 2006 white paper published by IDC, for the period 2002 to 2005, worldwide server blade shipments have grown at a compound annual rate of 134.2%. This same report anticipates that by 2010, server blades will account for approximately 25% of server units shipped worldwide. SMART's new modules enable OEMs to configure their boards with the precise amount of memory required for each end customer's requirements, and still allow for system upgrades later. (Click here for details) "With the availability of these new products, SMART provides a comprehensive selection of small DDR2 modules that can accommodate virtually any networking or embedded computing design need for performance, form factor, density, and configuration," said Alan Gulachenski, SMART's Senior Director of Advanced Memory Solutions. The new modules complement SMART's family of Mini-DIMMs by providing designers with more form factor and density options. For example, SMART's SO-DIMMs can be mounted with back-to-back style butterfly connectors to minimize routing and save space. For ATCA style systems, SO-DIMMs allow enough space to place mezzanine cards above the SO-DIMMs while meeting stringent height constraints. The module types listed in the following table are available immediately: Module Densities Type # of Mod. Application Pins Config.
