SMART Modular Technologies Introduces Full Product Lineup of High Density DDR2 Registered VLP DIMMs12 October 2005
SMART Modular Technologies, a leading
independent manufacturer of memory module products and services, has
released a full lineup of DDR2 registered very low profile (VLP) DIMMs,
with densities ranging from 512MB to 2GB and a module height of only 0.72".
These DIMMs, which are RoHS-compliant, are targeted for blade computing
applications where low height and high density are required.
SMART offers two types of 2 GB DDR2 registered VLP DIMMs: one using 512Mb
devices and another using 1Gb devices. Both types use two-high BGA stacking
for space savings. With the SMART approach, OEMs have the option to design
in both types of 2GB modules and have the flexibility to switch between the
two to take advantage of future pricing and availability trends.

For power-sensitive applications, such as network storage or embedded
computing products, SMART offers
x8-based VLP DIMMs. For these designs, power savings is achieved using
fewer devices per rank of memory on a module.
SMART's lineup of DDR2 registered VLP DIMMs is offered in three speed
grades that specifically address the needs of sub-1U high-performance blade
computing applications: PC2-5300 (DDR2-667), PC2-4200 (DDR2-533), and
PC2-3200 (DDR2-400). For all of its DDR2 VLP DIMMs, SMART uses the
highest-grade DRAM devices and performs rigorous module testing in order to
provide high quality and robust performance. To ensure compatibility and
repeatability, SMART performs thorough system testing and applies strict
bill of materials (BOM) control.
