SMART Modular Technologies Launches Industry-Leading VLP and Standard 4GB Four-Rank DDR2-667 CoolFlex Registered DIMMs

31 December 2006

SMART Modular Technologies (NASDAQ: SMOD), a leading independent manufacturer of memory modules, embedded computing subsystems, and TFT-LCD display products, has launched two new 4GB four-rank DDR2-667 registered DIMMs. Designed for use in blade servers and high-performance computing (HPC) applications, the new cost-effective modules are built using mainstream 512Mb DDR2-667/533 devices. These 512Mb devices are expected to remain in the sweet spot through 2009 according to iSuppli Corp.

Optimized for HPC applications, one of the two 4GB CoolFlex registered DIMMs features an industry-standard 1.18" height. Manufactured using standard, off-the-shelf 512Mb DDR2-667 BGAs, this 4GB module is configured as 512Mx72 with 72 placements of 128Mx4 BGAs.

The other 4GB four-rank CoolFlex registered DIMM leverages a very low profile or VLP (0.72") package. Configured as 512Mx72 using 1Gb dual-die-package DDPs that are based on 128x4 die, these DIMMs are well suited for use in mainstream blade server applications with up to eight vertical sockets. For example, by using these 4GB VLP DDR2-533 registered DIMMs, OEMs can populate blade servers with up to 32GB of high-speed memory.

SMART utilizes RoHs compliant CoolFlex foldable PCB architecture, dual-die-package DDP technologies and mainstream 512Mb DDR2-667 devices to offer these industry-leading, cost-effective 4GB four-rank DDR2-667/533 registered DIMMs.

Nam Hyung Kim, an analyst with iSuppli Corp., projects that the 4GB DIMM market will grow fivefold in 2007. In addition, Semico Research Corporation sees blade servers as one of the fastest growing computing segments. It anticipates that blade servers will be responsible for 20% to 30% of the overall server market revenue by 2010. "But even more significant [than the market share increase of blade servers] is the related growth in memory demand," said Bob Merritt, Vice President of Semico Research Corporation. "We expect that the average amount of blade server memory will double every two years."

Manufacturers of HPC servers are looking to provide maximum system memory density at competitive price points, while maintaining the highest levels of quality and reliability. "SMART is addressing this need by offering proven 4GB module solutions that employ the most cost-effective DRAMs and packaging options available on the market today," stated Mike Rubino, SMART's Vice President of Engineering. "Our early investments in technology are transforming SMART's ability to offer leading-edge, high-density modules in a variety of form factors at competitive prices."

The ordering part numbers for the new 4GB DDR2 SDRAM Registered DIMMs are listed in the table below.
