Sony's new hard disk drive-based Handycam(R) camcorders deliver high quality and high capacity20 July 2006
Sony of Canada Ltd., Canada's leading supplier of electronic and computer products for consumers and business, today announced three new hard disk drive-based Handycam(R) camcorders. The new Sony Handycam DCR-SR80, DCR-SR60 and DCR-SR40 hard drive-based models have extraordinary recording times and offer seamless connectivity with personal computers. The introduction of these products, complemented by Sony's announcement earlier today of the technology-leading HDR-UX1 Handycam camcorder, means Canadians have more choice than ever before when it comes to the number of models and variety of recording media available to them in a camcorder. There are now 18 Handycam camcorders to choose from. And, only Sony offers a complete range of camcorder technologies supporting the following media formats - DVD disc, MiniDV tape, Digital8 tape and hard-disk drive. The 60 GB (gigabyte) hard drive of the Handycam DCR-SR80 camcorder captures up to 41 hours of footage in long-play mode (3 Mbps (megabits per second)) or up to 14 hours of DVD movie-quality video in high-quality mode (9 Mbps). The Handycam DCR-SR60 and the DCR-SR40 models have comparable recording times with 30 GB of internal capacity - up to 20 hours of footage in long-play mode and more than seven hours of DVD movie quality video in high- quality mode. All three new camcorders are designed to capture the activity and spontaneity of life. They each use the HDD Smart Protection system, which combines physical shock absorbers, G-sensor(TM) shock protection and video stream buffering to help prevent data loss if the cameras are dropped or shaken. These new models also feature Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lenses for maintaining image clarity, colour resolution and easy on-camera editing. Sony's hard disk drive-based Handycam camcorders support visual index, which allows users to find a particular scene easily and quickly. "Hard disk drive technology enables instant access and rapid scene search without fast-forwarding or rewinding," explained Samuel Yip, Product Manager, Handycam Camcorder, Consumer Audio Visual/Information Technology Group, Sony of Canada Ltd. "Within this high capacity recording format - which offers more content storage capability than any other format, Sony offers considerable choice for consumers, such that they can select a camcorder that most closely reflects their lifestyle and needs." The three hard disk drive units are supplied with a Handycam Station that connects the camcorder to a personal computer (PC), television set or DVDirect (TM) DVD recorder with the supplied USB (universal serial bus), AV and DC-in cables. When the Handycam Station is connected to a compatible PC, the system will detect and transfer new video content to the computer's hard drive for back-up. The new camcorders are also packaged with DVD authoring software to edit video once downloaded to a PC. For those times when users want to take their video "offline," the Handycam Station features a One Touch DVD Burn button that automatically burns video to a DVD via a PC. The Handycam Station is also designed to work seamlessly with Sony's DVDirect recorder to copy the footage from the camcorder to a DVD disc, enabling PC-less operation. << New Model Pricing and Availability: - The 60 GB Handycam DCR-SR80 model has a wide 2.7-inch wide (16:9 ratio) hybrid LCD (liquid crystal display) with start, stop and zoom buttons, 12X optical zoom, a one-mega pixel CCD (charge-coupled device) imager and an active interface shoe for attaching accessories such as an external microphone or light.
