SST Expands Its Popular NAND Flash Disk Controller Family

SST (Silicon Storage Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: SSTI)), a leader in flash memory technology, today announced it has expanded its NAND Flash Disk Controller family with the introduction of the SST55LC100. The addition of this new media controller device complements SST's NAND Flash Disk Controller family by providing customers with a high-performance, high-reliability, cost-effective solution, while further extending the family to a broader range of application. SST's NAND Flash Disk Controllers allow designers to create flash memory-based mass data storage solution for customer specific applications. The media controller family utilizes embedded SuperFlash technology, allowing the devices to support newly available NAND flash components through simple firmware modification.
"As the flash market is becoming more competitive with a number of new suppliers starting to deliver NAND flash components with different new features, such as read cache, write cache, copy back, multi-plane programming, etc., manufacturers are looking for an easy way to support these new memories," said Samuel Nakhimovsky, Sr. Product Marketing Manager of Application Specific Controller Products Group at SST. "Traditional masked-ROM based controllers, which require mask changes to incorporate any new NAND device, clearly can not catch up with the flood of new NAND product offerings and therefore limit the customers' choice of component selection. Through firmware changes that are quickly programmed into the embedded flash, SST's NAND flash controller provides the manufacturer the widest choice of supported NAND devices with the fastest time to market."
Ideal Solution for CompactFlash Card Manufactures
The SST55LC100 features a high-performance and flexible embedded flash architecture, which make it an ideal, cost-effective solution for the high- volume CompactFlash card market. The SST55LC100 delivers up to 10MByte/sec sustained read and write performance. In addition, the controller includes dynamic wear leveling and an advanced Error Correction (ECC) engine to substantially increase the endurance of CompactFlash cards above that of the individual NAND components specification. The SST55LC100 is offered in commercial and industrial temperature ranges and comes in a standard 100-pin TQFP package and the industry's smallest 9mm x 9mm TFBGA package. With the availability of the SST55LC100, SST continues to deliver on its corporate strategy of offering non-memory products outside of its traditional memory business.

About SST's 55 Series ATA Flash Disk Controller Family
SST's 55 Series NAND Flash Disk Controller family provides designers with the maximum simplification of the interface between the host system's bus and NAND flash media. The NAND Flash Disk Controller performs bad block management, bit error detection and correction, flash media wear leveling, all at maximum data throughput. These integrated controllers enable creation of NAND-based mass data storage products, removable or embedded, such as ATA-Disk Chips (ADC), ATA-Disk Modules (ADM), CompactFlash cards and small form factor solid state drives. The 55 Series supports the standard ATA/IDE protocol up to PIO Mode-4 and Multi-word DMA up to Mode-2 interface for increased performance and reliability. The controller family supports standard NAND flash media with 512-byte or 2-Kbyte page sizes in both x8 and x16 configuration.
