Stealth win home opener over Colorado, 10-716 January 2006
SAN JOSE - Despite being down 3-0 after the first quarter, the San Jose Stealth (2-1) took over for the remaining 45 minutes and defeated the Colorado Mammoth (2-2), 10-7, before 6,277 at HP Pavilion at San Jose tonight in the Stealth's 2006 home opener
Colorado jumped out to their lead on first quarter goals by Jay Jalbert, Dan Stroup and Dan Carey. But San Jose came back with two goals in a two-minute span of the second quarter. The first came at 3:05 by rookie forward Jeff Zywicki on the power play. Zywicki would go on to record a hat trick. Derek Malawsky followed at 4:50 with a short-handed goal.
Carey scored at 5:35 to give the Mammoth a 4-2 lead. However, the Stealth rallied to tie the game at 4-4 before halftime on goals by Zywicki at 8:06 and Curt Malawsky at 14:51.
San Jose went ahead for good when Ryan Boyle scored at 6:15 of the third quarter on assists by Zywicki and Derek Malawsky. Matt Alrich gave the Stealth a 6-4 lead nearly a minute later (7:13) on assists from Curtis Hodgson and Derek Malawsky.
The Mammoth scored two of the next three goals in the third quarter on tallies by Matt Leveque and Stroup while Alrich scored for the Stealth. But in the fourth quarter, San Jose outscored Colorado, 3-1, with two of the three Stealth goals coming from Hodgson and Derek Malawsky.
The last Stealth goal was scored by Zywicki with 37 seconds left on a penalty shot. The goal gave Zywicki his second hat trick of the season.
Zywicki wound up with three goals and two assists to lead San Jose's scoring. Derek Malawsky had four points on two goals and two assists. Gary Rosyski had three assists while Alrich had two goals. Colorado's leading scorer was Gavin Prout, who had five assists. Carey had two goals and a pair of assists while Stroup recorded a hat trick.
Anthony Cosmo went the distance in net for San Jose, stopping 43 of Colorado's 50 shots. San Jose put 57 shots on Colorado netminders Gee Nash and Chris Levis.
RADAR BLIPS: Zwyicki's first hat trick came in the season opener on Jan. 6 at Edmonton. That performance earned him National Lacrosse League Rookie of the Week honors...Rosyski is now two points shy from being San Jose's all-time scoring leader. He now has 380, two behind Josh Sanderson's 382...Tonight's game was the second time the Stealth opened the home portion of their schedule against the Mammoth. In their inaugural 2004 season, San Jose defeated Colorado, 13-12, on Jan. 10, 2004. The Stealth is now 2-1 in home openers...The win was also the first at home for new Stealth Coach Walt Christianson...San Jose returns to action next Saturday night against the Philadelphia Wings at HP Pavilion. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
