Stratos Taking Orders for BGAN Mobile Satellite Service

(TSX: SGB), the world's largest provider of Inmarsat mobile satellite services, today announced it is now taking orders from distribution partners and customers for Inmarsat BGAN (Broadband Global Area Network) service, which will be commercially available in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia within the next several weeks, and in North and South America in early 2006. Stratos has already received orders from distribution partners for more than 7,500 BGAN SIM (subscriber identity module) cards that will be packaged with BGAN terminals and sold to customers once service launches. The BGAN SIM card is inserted in the BGAN terminal and holds all of the unique data about the BGAN user, including phone number and preferences. The demand for BGAN SIMs from Stratos' distribution channel is a leading indicator of their interest in selling BGAN service and the demand they anticipate in the market. BGAN is a revolution in mobile communications, delivering broadband data and voice, simultaneously, to nearly any location throughout the world. Using compact, lightweight satellite terminals about the size of small laptop PCs, BGAN enables users to access e-mail, corporate networks and the Internet, transfer files, stream video, and make telephone calls at speeds up to 492 kbps - more than three times as fast as current-generation mobile satellite services. A fully functional BGAN broadband mobile office can be set up and shut down in minutes, without special technical expertise. The smallest BGAN terminal weighs less than one kilo, and full-featured terminals provide both streaming IP and background IP data options, as well as WiFi capability for multi-user access. Inmarsat BGAN uses a constellation of the most powerful communications satellites ever constructed, the first of which was successfully launched in March 2005. These satellites have 16 times the power and capacity of the current-generation Inmarsat satellite constellation, providing significantly enhanced performance and capability for users.
