Symantec to Support Linux on POWER With High Availability and Backup Solutions

Symantec (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced anagreement with IBM that provides for the delivery of Symantec highavailability, storage management, and backup products for the Linux onPOWER™ platform by the end of 2006. These solutions will help clientsconsolidate Linux applications on the IBM System p™ platform, leveragingthe benefits of IBM's leading System p hardware platform and Symantec'sleading data center infrastructure software.


The announcement is another example of Symantec's commitment to support allmajor UNIX, Linux and Windows platforms in the data center, enablingcustomers to standardize on a consistent software infrastructure acrossheterogeneous environments.


"Enterprise customers are looking for solutions that help them to reducethe cost and complexity of their data center environments," said RichardVillars, vice president of Storage Systems at IDC. "For those companiesthat are looking to Linux-based solutions like the Linux on POWER portfoliofrom IBM as part of these efforts, the ability to use standard storagemanagement solutions like those from Symantec provide the assurance thatthe addition of Linux will simplify the environment, not make it morecomplex."


The deal extends the strong engineering relationship between the twocompanies that began in April 2000. In addition, IBM will resell Symantec'sVeritas Cluster Server and the Veritas Storage Foundation family ofproducts with IBM System p servers for AIX and Linux on POWER in the U.S.Federal and Japan markets.


The addition of Symantec's high availability and storage managementsoftware, including Veritas Cluster Server, Veritas Storage Foundation,Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC, and Veritas Volume Replicator tothe IBM resell portfolio of System p software significantly enhances IBM'sability to offer clients integrated solutions in the key market segments ofU.S. Federal and Japan. The agreement also includes a commitment bySymantec to port these products and Veritas NetBackup Enterprise backup andrecovery technology to the Linux on POWER platform.

"We believe the Symantecproducts will add even more value to what already is one of the mostcost-effective and robust server lines on the market."


Symantec's Data Center Foundation products are available across all majorUNIX, Linux and Windows platforms. Veritas Cluster Server helps reduceapplication downtime and protect a variety of server and applicationenvironments, ranging from a single database instance to globally dispersedclusters. Veritas Storage Foundation provides data center-wide visibilityinto the storage environment, with power to control and manage thatenvironment. Veritas Volume Replicator provides a robuststorage-independent disaster recovery solution by replicating data over anyIP network, to maximize data protection and application availability.Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle® RAC greatly enhances themanagement and reliability of Oracle RAC environments.

Benefits to U.S Federal Sector


These Symantec solutions, available on IBM's POWER platform, arewell-positioned to help the U.S. federal government community improve theintegrity, performance, and assured recovery of critical IT assetsbenefiting citizen service, law enforcement, and national security.


According to a May 2006 U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) report,federal continuity of operations, or "COOP," capabilities are urgentlyrequired to mitigate the risk of disruptions stemming from terroristattacks, severe weather events and building-level contingencies such as theremoval of hazardous substances (GAO 06-713 Continuity of Operations). Byimproving the management of complex storage tasks and streamliningadministration of IT resources, Veritas Storage Foundation helps addressthe control and operational efficiency objectives of the U.S. Office ofManagement and Budget's (OMB) Circular A-123. Simultaneously, VeritasVolume Replicator and Cluster Server help critical IT systems remain atpeak performance during disasters and other crises, fulfilling keyrecommendations issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) inits Federal Preparedness Guide 65 (FPC-65: Federal Executive BranchContinuity of Operations).
