Symantec to Support Linux on POWER With High Availability and Backup Solutions9 June 2006
Symantec (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced anagreement with IBM that provides for the delivery of Symantec highavailability, storage management, and backup products for the Linux onPOWER™ platform by the end of 2006. These solutions will help clientsconsolidate Linux applications on the IBM System p™ platform, leveragingthe benefits of IBM's leading System p hardware platform and Symantec'sleading data center infrastructure software. The announcement is another example of Symantec's commitment to support allmajor UNIX, Linux and Windows platforms in the data center, enablingcustomers to standardize on a consistent software infrastructure acrossheterogeneous environments. "Enterprise customers are looking for solutions that help them to reducethe cost and complexity of their data center environments," said RichardVillars, vice president of Storage Systems at IDC. "For those companiesthat are looking to Linux-based solutions like the Linux on POWER portfoliofrom IBM as part of these efforts, the ability to use standard storagemanagement solutions like those from Symantec provide the assurance thatthe addition of Linux will simplify the environment, not make it morecomplex." The deal extends the strong engineering relationship between the twocompanies that began in April 2000. In addition, IBM will resell Symantec'sVeritas Cluster Server and the Veritas Storage Foundation family ofproducts with IBM System p servers for AIX and Linux on POWER in the U.S.Federal and Japan markets. The addition of Symantec's high availability and storage managementsoftware, including Veritas Cluster Server, Veritas Storage Foundation,Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC, and Veritas Volume Replicator tothe IBM resell portfolio of System p software significantly enhances IBM'sability to offer clients integrated solutions in the key market segments ofU.S. Federal and Japan. The agreement also includes a commitment bySymantec to port these products and Veritas NetBackup Enterprise backup andrecovery technology to the Linux on POWER platform.
