Frost & Sullivan's 2006 Technology Innovation of the Year Award in the field of biometrics for security applications goes to Maryland-based Genex Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Technest Holdings, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: TCNH). The company has been recognized for its introduction of a novel suite of facial recognition tools that utilize three dimensional feature analyses, a technology that comes in response to a wake of continuous security problems.
Each year Frost & Sullivan presents this Award to a company that has carried out new research, which has resulted in innovations that have or are expected to bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture. "Facial recognition systems offer a passive, non-intrusive way of tracking people by operating from a distance unlike the rather obtrusive and apparent iris and fingerprint verification systems," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Amreetha Vijayakumar. "However, the major disadvantage with many existing facial recognition technologies is that the software is chiefly driven by parameters that include the surrounding lighting condition, aging, expression, and pose."
In these systems, the probe image is the image captured during the authorization session and the enrolled image is the one that is saved in the application database. During the authentication process, the probe image and enrolled images are compared before the system grants permission for further access. If the software detects even the slightest difference in the probe image due to the parameters such as aging and lighting condition, the probability of system failing is quite high.
To circumvent the problems associated with the existing two-dimensional systems, Technest developed SureMatch 3D, a software suite of high performance facial recognition tools. This suite encompasses tools that can add 3D enhancements to the captured 2D photographs (3D FaceMap(TM)), capture and process 3D facial images (3D FaceCam(TM)), and perform matches on 2D, 3D, and combined 2D/3D data (3D FaceMatch(TM)). One specific tool can even change to create any face using powerful 3D morphing technology (3D SketchArtist(TM)). 3D SketchArtist(TM) stands to impact the Law Enforcement market by providing Law Enforcement professionals with the world's first 3D face sketching tool that can change virtually any feature of the face including noses, hair, and even expressions. Integrated together, these tools provide a capability to normalize probe and enrolled images to improve the accuracy of recognition in difficult environments. At the core of the SureMatch suite lays Technest's proprietary recognition engine, 3D FaceMatch(TM), which can be easily integrated with legacy systems to handle both 2D and 3D face image data.
