With support from Hands On Network, the Corporation for National and Community Service and local business sponsors, the Community Restoration Project focuses on ways to overcome violence through service, communication and understanding based on principles taught by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Cesar Chavez, Gandhi, and other leaders. Volunteers will meet at 8:00 a.m. at service sites for registration and breakfast. They will spend the morning at the project site and then join the MLK365/NAACP rally at the Sacramento Convention Center. At 12:30 p.m. volunteers will gather for lunch and reflection at Capitol Plaza Towers. The Community Restoration Project is the launching pad for a longer-term initiative for Sacramento, the Season for Nonviolence, a national 64-day campaign inspired by the memorial anniversaries of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi. During these 64 days, people all over the world focus on the lives and teachings of these great leaders and commit to practicing nonviolence each in their own lives. Season for Nonviolence activities will be lead by Christ Unity Church and the Spiritual Life Center through the month of April. "Dr. Martin Luther King dedicated his life to helping Americans of all backgrounds achieve equality of treatment, opportunity and responsibility. He encouraged citizens to contribute to their communities by uniting and taking action," said Nancy Findeisen, CEO of Community Services Planning Council. "Sacramentans are keeping his dream alive by dedicating their time and talents helping others." Hands On Sacramento, a program of the Community Services Planning Council, organizes volunteer opportunities to match the schedules of busy individuals, families, groups and businesses.
