Vitesse Demonstrates Serial Attached SCSI RAID-on-Chip to OEM Customers27 June 2005
Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ:VTSS), a leader in Storage ICs, today announced the successful demonstration of its ground-breaking VSC7250 RAID-on-Chip (ROC) Controller for Serial Attached SCSI (SAS). The device was shown running the widely-accepted and industry-leading RAID software from Adaptec. Demonstrations to major OEM customers included both embedded Adaptec RAID Code (ARC(TM)) and HostRAID(TM) drivers. These demonstrations show the full breadth of features available in the combined product offering and extensive interoperability across SAS disk drive vendors and connection topologies. This demonstrated functionality and the interoperability of the ROC with the software on OEM platforms cements the initiation of SAS technology to the storage market, bringing the industry closer to full-blown SAS platform releases.
"Demonstration of VSC7250-based RAID performance to our OEM customers is a significant milestone along our path to production release of the VSC7250 and VSC7251. Vitesse is pleased with its ability to demonstrate these features within four months of the formation of its partnership with Adaptec. We look forward to supporting our OEM customers as they launch their first SAS ROC-based products into the market," said Tim Hornback, director of marketing for the Storage Products Division at Vitesse.
The Vitesse VSC7250 and VSC7251 operate with commercially available software drivers to provide customers with several upgradeable I/O options. The base-level driver supports I/O Controller mode (no RAID) and Adaptec HostRAID with RAID levels 0 and 1. Available upgrade paths utilize Adaptec RAID Code (ARC), an industry-proven RAID stack. ARC gives customers multiple comprehensive RAID levels to suit their unique storage requirements for today and tomorrow, addressing the rebuild challenges of higher capacity SAS and SATA drives in current JBOD deployments. The VSC7250 includes an integrated processor and dedicated RAID hardware acceleration engines, giving workstation and server OEMs a high-performance, cost-effective, single-chip solution at a fraction of the cost of the traditional board-level products available today. The VSC7250 and VSC7251 are part of the extensive portfolio of Vitesse NexSAS(TM) products designed specifically for SAS applications.
