Volkswagen at the 2006 Toronto Auto Show unveils new 2007 Golf and Passat wagon16 February 2006
Volkswagen Canada will premiere two brand new 2007 models at the 2006 Toronto auto show, the all-new Passat Wagon, and the fifth version of the Volkswagen Golf. The 200hp GTI and the Eos, a new convertible coupe, will make their regional debuts at this show. The all-new 2007 Golf, which will be available in showrooms this summer, shares the same styling as the GTI, and is powered by Volkswagen's new 2.5L 5 cylinder motor that produces 150hp and 170ft.-lbs. of torque. A 5 speed manual transmission is standard, and a 6 speed automatic transmission optional. As usual, the Golf will be available in either a 2-door or 4-door model that come with a host of standard features, such as front side thorax and curtain airbags, Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR), and a 4-link fully independent rear suspension system similar to the new GTI. Optional equipment on the new Golf includes a premium stereo system, heated front seats, Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), power sunroof and 16" alloy wheels. The all-new 2007 Passat Wagon has been stridently refined in attention to detail, advanced technology, Teutonic driving qualities and uncompromising safety design and features. Volkswagen's designers have given the car a look of ambience and spatial presence. The new 2007 Passat Wagon, which will be available in dealerships this March, has a new medallion-shaped grille accented by brilliantly clear, clean, high-tech headlight housings that exude precision engineering. The base engine is the four-cylinder 2.0T, which is also found in the Passat Sedan. The engine's overall efficiency begins with an advanced direct- injection fuel delivery system that culminates in 200 hp at 5,100 revolutions per minute, and 207 lbs.-ft. of torque all the way from 1,800 rpm to 5,000 rpm - an extraordinary torque curve that provides plenty of pulling power from the low end through the top. The Passat Wagon is also available with a 280hp 3.6L V6 engine. This newly advanced engine has higher-displacement, four-valves-per-cylinder, variable valve timing, and promises 280 hp at 6,200 rpm and 265 ft.-lbs, at just 2,750rpm. Volkswagen's refined six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic(TM) and sport mode selection will be standard equipment. 4-Motion, Volkswagen's highly advanced all-wheel-drive system will also be available on the 3.6L V6 Passat Wagon. Making its regional debut in Toronto, the GTI best represents VW's special appeal to drivers seeking affordable German bred performance at great value. Available in March 2006 the completely redesigned "pocket rocket" now comes with a potent new 2.0 litre turbocharged powerplant with FSI technology, which delivers 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. The new GTI also uses a new fully independent, sports-tuned suspension - a first for the GTI-standard six-speed manual transmission. The GTI has an understated but dynamically aggressive style outside and a practical interior that equally mixes functionality, flair and a preoccupation with a driver-first focus and layout. Furthermore Volkswagen lets you and your entire family feel the driving pleasure of the new turbocharged direct-injected GTI in the Power Slider game. The Eos is Volkswagen's new convertible coupe, the world's first four seater car with a five section CSC roof. The folding hard top combines the characteristics of a coupe, sliding and convertible roof, unifying three different car concepts to form a whole. When closed, the CSC roof curves in an arc between the rear end and the windscreen, giving rise to an outstanding coupe roof which is both elegant and sporty. When the roof is open, the 4.41 meter long and 1.79 meter wide Eos also clearly reveals that it has been specifically developed as a convertible coupe. It is expected that the Eos will be on sale in Canada in fall 2006. It will be offered with the renowned 2.0T four cylinder engine(*). The Eos will be launched with one high-quality equipment package expected to include ESP, safety optimized front headrests, front airbags and specially developed side head-thorax airbags, 16" alloy wheels, air conditioning, fog lights, electric windows, ambient lighting, leather covered steering wheel, gear lever knob and hand brake lever, plus sports seats. Options are expected to include features such as Dynaudio sound system with ten channel amplifier, ten loudspeakers and 600 W output and power or bi-xenon headlights with dynamic and static cornering lights(*). The Volkswagen Touareg R-GT will also be on display at the Volkswagen stand in Toronto. This one-off, special edition vehicle was built by HPA Motorsports in Surrey, British Colombia for the annual SEMA show. The SEMA (Specialty Equipment Manufacturing Association) show takes place every fall in Las Vegas, and is the world's premiere automotive specialty products event that attracts over 100,000 visitors each year, showcasing all the new products available in the aftermarket industry. This Touareg features a 3.2L V6 engine, which has been transformed into a twin-turbo monster that produces 500 horsepower and 550lbs.-ft. of torque. The exterior of the Touareg R-GT features a Volkswagen Individual body kit, and a set of custom 22" Avus(R) wheels. This is one car that needs to be seen in person to truly be appreciated, and shows how an everyday vehicle can be transformed into a supercar. Natural Resources Canada has awarded EnerGuide awards to Volkswagen Canada for the New Beetle TDI and Jetta Wagon, recognized as the most fuel- efficient vehicles in their categories. Both of these vehicles will be on display in the EnerGuide booth. (*) - Information subject to change.
